Thank you for the review, Casimir, but I think it highlights an essential problem with long-running franchise films (maintaining quality and interest) and the contemporary issue of presentation over content.

Yes, I'm sure the film looks and sounds spectacular, but it's otherwise pretty forgettable as a piece of narrative.

I know plenty of members buy a film purely as a system showcase, and there's nothing wrong with that, but there is a danger of style taking precedence over storytelling, which doesn't have much long term value in my opinion.

Or maybe I should just watch my Blu-Ray again!

I would disagree completely with this statement, the last two MI films in my opinion, have been the strongest so far.

How many bond films have there been??

I agree in principal, but I don't expect good storytelling with this kind of film.

It must just be me, then, as I always expect good storytelling no matter what the genre.

It is one of the fundamentals of film making for me. I rapidly lose interest if the characters are just ciphers for the action set pieces, I have to care about them and their journey.

Which is why I think the franchise peaked with III and is slowly heading downhill, though I'm more than happy to be proved wrong if VI gets that balance right.

Incidentally, why is this Box packaged as 4K + Blu-Ray? No one would bother with the Blu if they have the 4K disc and it just unnecessarily bumps up the price.

To be honest, I used to have very high standards for films, but getting a home cinema system encouraged me to "enjoy" the crash bang wallop stuff.

Okay, have just watched "Rogue Nation" and I was wrong. But also partially right.

The franchise is not on a downward curve as it was a huge improvement over "Ghost Protocol". The production values were stratospheric, the stunt work tremendous, the set pieces enormous and the sound design superlative. Dolby Atmos really is a remarkable addition to Home Cinema, even with just upfiring speaker modules.

But I am partially right as I realised (doh!) that these are plot-driven, not character-driven films and should be judged on that criteria. The stories don't make a lot of sense and are very convoluted, but it's a rollercoaster and you just strap yourself in for the ride.

As David above says: this is material made for Home Cinema - an audiovisual feast without having to put up with seat kickers, sweet munchers and mobile phone idiots annoying you.

And when I wake up tomorrow I probably won't remember any of it!

I think I need to watch "Ghost Protocol" again.

I may have judged it too harshly as I really enjoyed III and regard that film as the highlight of the series (so far). When you've had your expectations raised like that, then it's always difficult to meet them fairly.

I need to see it and judge it on its own terms, not in comparison to III, I think.

But, overall, I do think this franchise is of a better quality and more consistent than others, like "Alien" (two films), "Terminator" (two films) and in particular, "Transformers" (one film) and "The Fast & The Furious" (no films!).
