Watched this at the cinema and last night on regular blu ray, probably my favourite film of the year. It is rare for a film to actually leave you breathless but this did at points, really superbly made. I'll be sure to get this on 4k now, thanks.

Also Cav-El was a bad ass in this and anyone who doesn't think so is a stupid idiot. So there.

Saw this multiple times on IMAX, it worries me that they’ve altered the colouring.

Shame they've gone dual format on this, my fixed frame screen doesn't like this sort of thing too much!! Will probably run 2.4:1 with masking on the image - I'm assuming it can be viewed this way without losing any important imagery?

I don't think that the IMAX scenes will look very good masked. Certainly there are one or two shots - particularly at the end - where the vertical-panning-and-zoom-out wouldn't really work. They didn't give us a test copy of the BD but I'm assuming that follows the same mixed aspect ratio. The only way you'll be able to tell for sure is by trying it mate.

      Cheers Cas,
This is on the Christmas list to join the fantastic box set we are currently working our way through.
Interesting comments on the colour timing.

Yes it was a mixed aspect ratio as well on the regular blu ray I think, I'd had a couple of glasses of Scotch though as a disclaimer.

Thanks for the excellent review, Cas. My partner is buying this for my birthday on the 11th. Can't wait to see this, especially that's it's thought of as the best MI film so far.

Argh I LOVED this film when I saw it in the cinema, and I’m completely unsure which version to get.

      4K Blu Ray, but it’s £25

4K iTunes, cheapest but the picture and sound aren’t quite as good as the disc (though the DD+ on Incredibles 2 was excellent)

Blu Ray for Regular HD but proper HD Audio for £15

Has anyone demoed these side by side? It’s really hard to judge without seeing them all and knowing what I’d be missing out on?!

It is Atmos and HDR/DV on iTunes. I do have a collection of 4k blu rays but only reserve that for when there is a film I really like, such as 2001: A space Odyssey. I have also got the Revenant on iTunes and 4k blu ray and the difference is obviously the soundtrack quality.

Hey, just to update, I checked and there are one or two IMAX shots where the focal point of the image is at the top or bottom (I don't really want to spoil anything) so matting won't work I'm afraid.

Well, they managed it in normal cinemas... though come to think of it they would have moved where in the 2.40:1 crop was in the frame. I remember the director mentioned this on his Twitter

Just an after thought really Cas, but if you would like to forward your 4k disc to me, I'm happy to check to confirm your findings, purely for research purposes only:smashin:

Yes, there are clearly shots where they must have moved the crop up or down, otherwise key shots at the middle and end would have been just
      sky
      and
      rope
      respectively, lol.

      thanks Cas

loved it at the cinema - really was mighty close to infinity war as the best film I have seen this year was a no brainer buy for me on 4K anyway but delighted it is an unmissable purchase

I keep telling myself that I don't really like Tom Cruise but then I see have dozens of his films in my collection and that a lot of them are properly favourite films of mine and maybe I have to revisit that opinion - seriously you have to give it to Tom for coming back from complete un hireable obscurity in Hollywood to where he is now and for turning out product of true entertainment value time after time

I could easily see loads more of these at this quality even if Tom has to take a team leader role at IMF in a few years time - but if you have watched Fallout did you see any evidence that he is starting to slow down?

I did like the Cav- El line though

I've never seen any of these films but have the 4k box set and this coming as a Christmas present. Are all the movies good? I had assumed it might be like the Alien or Jurassic Park franchise.

Completely the opposite. They get better (with the exception on Mi2) the further along the series you go.

      @Casimir Harlow

Thanks for the biggest review of the year Cas ... since you reviewed this for the cinema :smashin:

This was my film of the year ... from the moment I walked out the IMAX cinema, I could not wait to see this on 4K.

I prayed we’d get the imax scenes and we have  and to hear you say they are some of the best imax on 4K is fantastic ... but have we got ‘all’ the IMAX footage or just the halo & helicopter scenes ? I remember the bathroom scene was IMAX ... is that imax on the 4K here ?

The main picture with adjusted colour & added grain does concern me ... why have they done this ? One of the most expensive & best looking films that looked incredible at the cinema ... why not give us a pristine print ? :(

That said, it sounds like the image still looks excellent albeit not demo (other than IMAX) so hopefully I’ll be able to adjust to the colour change ... but I’m not a grain liker !

Appreciate the detailed (early) review though Cas

I can’t wait to see this ... it is the best film I saw this year, the best film I’ve seen in years ... it’s one of the best films I’ve seen period !

Nah the bathroom scene wasn't IMAX, if it were, they'd have included it on the disc

There was no need to pray, the director was quite vocal about keeping the IMAX ratio on the home release :)

Mate, it was my film of the year too, as you can probably tell.

I'm afraid that it is just the halo and helicopter scenes in IMAX. In fact, I'm not entirely sure they shot anything using official IMAX cameras (I think they tried, but it proved problematic), but nonetheless the 'IMAX'-effect sequences are only the two listed. Both are interspliced with 2.4:1 aspect shots, which is what makes their contrast with the rest of the footage more noticeable.

I was sure the bathroom scene was imax.
I saw the film at Bradford IMAX and was watching for aspect changes like a hawk ... the bathroom scene I was sure expanded ?

I was praying as things are never certain until we get the disc.

Thanks Cas, looking forward to this even more now!
Currently working my way through the 4K box set to get us in the groove.

Good to know in advance about the switching aspect ratio, as I am forewarned now to set my screen masks appropriately
