mis-sold a plasma?

Last week after what seemed an eternity of doing loads of overtime i finally had the cash to buy my first plasma and after seeing all the major retailers and not liking their poor set ups i decided on a pioneer 435xde from richer sounds as the screen looked very good when set up and running.
Since making my purchase i have since found out that there is a 436de which has 2hd connections and uses crystals instead of glass thus producing a better picture.
When buying the plasma the wife and myself both asked the salesman if it was the latest model as we were aware that a lot of the stuff they sold was end of line etc but he insisted it was the latest model with nothing new on the horizon.
Basically what i want to know is can i get a refund or do i have to accept what i have.
The tv was bought 8 days ago but remains unopened as i am converting my living room to home cinema

I think you probably have a case to ask for a refund, if the conversation is as you stated, and the salesman clearly stated there was no new model.

However, your case clearly demonstrates that anyone spending this type of cash MUST do some research before handing over the credit card. At the end of the day, I do think consumers have to take some responsibility.

Let us know how you get on :)

I did loads of research b4 i went out to buy a telly but at the time pioneer was not one that i had considered, it was only when i saw it in the showroom that i decided to buy it which is why i asked him if it was the l8est model....admittedly i maybe should have gone away and done some more research but at the end of the day the guy told me a bare faced lie.
Dont get me wrong the 435 imo has a great picture and i would be happy with it on my wall, its just that i dont like being lied to which was obviously for the sake of the sale.
I have just been on the phone to both pioneer who have assured me that the 435 is still a good buy and to richer sounds who have offered me £150 in vouchers and the shop manager who has offered me a free samsung hd dvd player...sweeteners to the value of £280.

Just want to stress, I wasn't criticising :)

But how many consumers walk into a shop, and spend £2000+ on a model they haven't considered before? Quite a few I would suggest, so you are far from alone. Personally, I wouldn't take the offers, and get the TV changed. Its value, due to being an older model, is likely to diminish very quickly. And will it niggle you knowing you could have had better for the money? It would me :)

Take it back, the 436xde is far, far better than the 435xde.

You will always know you have an outdated screen and another one that is far better could have been yours for nearly the same money.

Couple of small points.

I don't want to defend the salesman but he may not have known there was a new model. I've been into Richer Sounds a few times and found that the sales staff weren't up to scratch and didn't know of much outside of their stock. One huy even thought a DVI socket was an HDMI connection. He had to get the manager over because he wouldn't have it from me.

Also, that Samsung player won't be a HD DVD player. It will likely be one of their upscaling models which scale regular DVD to 720p or 1080i. It will most likely be the HD950 model and that HD is just the model number, it doesn't signify that it will play Hi Definition discs when they are released. You may be aware but I wouldn't want you to be mis sold a sweetener! :D

richersounds rarely sell the latest gear.
They are known as "grey import" and "end of line" specialists.

that's why they are so cheap.

Thats exactly what they do, I would doubt you have a chance of getting your money back, it is fit for purpose, even thought its an older model it will be cheaper than the 436 thats for sure

Richer sounds are usually great, i have never had an issue with them.

I believe they have a 28 day return policy, the fact you have not opened it will negate any issues with this.

I don't think RS would have any problem giving you a refund, Julian Richer is there to make money, but he is would rather keep you as a customer long term than loose you for a couple of grand.

I admit as the company has grown sometimes his ethics are not carried out as he would like, but he is a very fair person and expects his company to be run the way he envisages.

Yeah Richer sounds are very good on that kind of thing...I once bought a pair of speakers from them that cost £300 and found out the next day that they were going for £99 to What Hifi customers. I wrote a letter and the big man himself sorted out a refund for me...now thats what I call service

I don't think RS do grey imports. They state that on their site(or used to). Its the salesmans responsibilty to know the market, not the customers, so you should get a refund :)
