I have a Sony JB920 and the display has started flickering and music is starting to skip a second or two.
It started while making a copy of The Darkness's latest album for my portable minidisc player.

I know that this particular cd is protected and wondered if this was the problem, but I've put a pre-recorded minidisc into the machine and the display is still flickering but the music is not skipping.

I've recorded the album on another two minidiscs and the music still skips, so it looks like a new player is on it's way?
    Any recommendations? Another Sony?

Does a minidisc player/recorder use individual lasers for playing and recording?

    Thanks

The laser might be getting weak, once it's gone it's gone basically, and would be too expensive to replace if not under warranty. I believe there's only one laser for recording/playback. You could try a lens cleaner, that might prolong it's usability a bit. It should be all right for playback for quite a while yet, but recording takes far more power.

The Sony MDS-JB980 is a great deck if you're considering another one.

I had a similar problem with my Sharp portable minidisc player and had it repaired for a reasonable price.

The problem you had was music skipping?
Did you have to have a new laser fitted, and if you did, how much did it cost you?

I've searched all over the house and can't find it. I took it to Sharpserv as they are only a couple of miles away from me (Mansfield). I'm not sure if they just service Sharp goods though.
