I'm looking to output from my old Sony Handycam to laptop but not sure what options I have...

I've got a USB and 'DV' / iLink port on the camcorder - presuming the USB port is not going to work so do I just need a DV/iLink to HDMI cable to transfer data to laptop? - or something else?

HDMI on a laptop is just about always an output only, so no use for capturing video.
The USB output on the camcorder is for stills/photos and possibly webcam quality video, so again is no use for capturing video.

So your only option with the camcorder & laptop combo is to use the analogue AV output on the camcorder and get an analogue to USB adaptor. This does work but there is likely to be a fair drop in quality going this route. The only way to capture from a miniDV camcorder at full quality is to use firewire/iLink/ieee1394/DV (all the same thing, just different names).

So you are looking for something like this
