    Jonah Hill's directorial debut:
    Mid90s | Official Trailer HD | A24

Jonah Hill has never been an actor I've cared much for so I won't hold my breath for his directing skills but at least the film seems different, plus it is A24.

He seems to be going for the VHS look that's popular right now with the desaturated colours and 4:3 aspect ratio but he doesn't seem to be willing to go all out. I kind of wish he shot the thing on actual VHS as an entire film shot on that format would definitely be unique.

Also, I've seen the title formatted as either Mid-90s or Mid '90s but Mid90s is the one A24 used for the trailer.

Not really a fan of crappy formats and aspect ratios (unless there's some justification for it eg A Ghost Story) so that puts me off a bit. All looks a bit 'student film'. However as its A24 I might be interested.

Watched the trailer earlier, did not hold my attention to the finish.

Have to say, thought this was terrific. There was a one off screening tonight and I was torn between this and The Goonies, but I’m so glad I opted for this. Funny, sad and beautifully acted across the board. Nostalgic and full of good music, not to mention a (great) new score from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. The only issue I had was it was to short, at a mere 1 hour 20 mins, it ended a bit abruptly, could’ve easily spent another 15-20 mins with these characters and it have a more satisfying conclusion.
You don’t notice the aspect ratio after a couple of minutes.
    8.5/10
