I use a Panasonic DVX110`s with excellent video results but have tried several different external microphones and all seem to generate an amount of background hum on the soundtrack.
The latest ( Audio Technica ATR55) gives excellent sound results but still with a small amount of hum. There is none when using the built in mike in the camera.
    Can anybody out there help?
It occurs to me that this might be something to do with the screening of the lead but any information would be gratefully recieved.

If you're getting hum from any mic that you use, it may be the connection. If you don't get a tight connection (especially with mini-jacks) you can get an earth leak that can cause hum.
With the mics that you have used does the one that hums the least have a tighter fit?
