To look at is this just a standard fig 8 power cord and is the cord dangerous when used with other devices?

If so then I have a problem (which i'm sure may others share too)....

I didn't use the original power cord that came with my xbox (too short in length).

OK fine...however God knows where the original one is as it's been put into 'cirrculation' in the house somewhere..or is it in my 'power cable drawer' mixed in with several other fig 8 cables
I may never know (until it's too late!)

Yeah I did exactly the same. I used a Russ Andrews yello on the x-box and can't find the original.

Time to start pulling everything out and unplugging. :thumbsdow

You cant be married mate. It was either spend the money on my av system or I see a growth in moisturiser, nail varnish and other female trivia that seems to mulitply everytime I leave the humble abode.

No, seriously I had one lying around and it really does make a difference.

I just checked my serial number and it's unaffected anyway.

I got an email from microsoft yesterday:

So I have gone to the site and ordered a free new cord from them, although I have not had any problems with my xbox you can never tell if it has affected or started to affect components inside your console.

Sound or Picture improved? or both? And in what way? If you don't mind answering.

None, the only way to get upgraded mains is a dedicated filtered spur from the consumer unit. not by plugging in a £30 power lead.

There is a visible picture quality improvement and sound is cleaner and more rhythmic.
We're definitely going to be off-topic if we continue this discussion here so all I will say is this:
I have for the last four years invested heavily in the quality of my mains supplies to all my av components and interconnects and speaker cables to the point where i have a dedicated 230v supply in my cinema room and either Russ Andrews or Mark Grant power cords or interconnects to all components.
I can confidently state that the return on my investment has been well worth it.
It is possible to get a lot of performance out of very modest kit if you take this route.

A good comparison is taking a basic car and upgrading key components to squeeze extra performance. Its still a Fiesta but one with punch!

I have to disagree with doink because it is a fact that a well constructed lead that is built to reduce airborne RFI (as the leads I use are) will have a noticeable effect. Yes if you are able, you should get back as far down the 230/40v supply as you can but, any reduction in RFI is better than none and can make a real difference.

If one was to replace all of their stock power cords with RFI reducing cords and do nothing else, IMO one would definitely notice a difference.

Then again everyone has a different interpretation of what is "good sound."

You have to try yourself and see.

I believe both below people will give a refund if your not happy.

Mark Grant is a member of this forum and is IMHO an excellent source for high end cables.
Russ Andrews have their own site for info.

I have no financial links with either for the record.

Hope this helps and starts another convert on the road to true hi-fi enlightenment.

    Regards

    Mark ;)

I wasn't agreeing with doink in the slightest as his staement was drivel. I have a mate who has a couple of Black Widow power cords for his Arcam kit and the sound difference was instantly noticable, even when one of them was connected to a Belkin 4-way power strip. But as per my original enquiry i was curious as to how it improved the xbox, and now I know.

    Ours says:

    2002 - 02 - 16

So must be 16th February 2002, so I'd say yours is 7th November 2003. Americans seem to put their dates a bit arse about face.

Go to the website (first page of this thread), and put in your serial number. It'll tell you if you need one or not.

Something like that. Red button is "test". Green is "reset".

All in, I think microsoft have ended up paying me for this xbox :) I bought when they where £299 ... a couple of days later they dropped to £199. So I got a £100 refund from Game (10 return policy). Then I got a 2nd controller & two games free from Microsoft (rrp ~£110) as an apology for dropping the price, and now a free surge protector. Can't argue with that ;)

I got that same email, and frankly, it reeks of a phishing scam. If this is an actual email from MS, then they really need to work on their customer alert method. Even the From address is rediculously generic.

I'll be checking the official site to see if I need a replacement, but there's no way I'm following the links in that email.

Very strange, I ordered 2 cables (one for my xbox and one for a buggered up one in the garage just in case). Cables arrived today, only instead of 2, there were 4.... Anybody interested in one? or ill just keep them in the garage with the old xbox...

Just got an email from M$ to say my cable had shipped and to wait 2-3 weeks for delivery. It must be coming on a carrier pigeon:

Your order for a Xbox Replacement Cord has shipped. Please allow 2 - 3 weeks for delivery. While you are waiting for the new cord to arrive, turn off your console whenever it is unattended. Please install the new cord when you receive it. Thank you, The Xbox Team

There is a big button on the main www.xbox.com homepage, just click it and input your serial number etc. Did it myself last night so it is still there.
