OK - I got a 360 for Christmas today, great! Plugged it in, all looked fantastic on my HD TV. ANyway, put a disc in the drive (Gears of war), the game loads but it sounds like a jack hammer - i've never heard a noise quite like it coming from a disc drive.
So I turned it off quick, upon turning it back on, the disc won't load. No discs will load at all (horizontally or vertically). So its screwed- back to the shop tomorrow for a new one! Not a good start.....

Not my real reason for post - would anyone recommend the MS extended warranty, or has one?

What's the error message when you try a game?

I wasn't even getting one - it didn't even recognise a disc was in there (of any sort).
Went out this morning and swapped over for a new one, which works!

So the Q now is, is the warranty worth it would anyone think?

Mine died a death today, and it was an xmas present from my girlfriend! So it
has had all of about 6 hours use from new! Gutted as it was going to be our
entertainment for today. Back to the ol' Playstation 2

The ring of death had three red lights on it when I tried to power it up this
morning. So I switched it off at the mains, now it's completely dead. Power
supply has the amber light on, but the Xbox doesn't do anything, no lights, no
    nothing!

She bought it from Woolworths online so I'm going to try taking it back to
one of their stores tomorrow. Hopefully they'll swap it no questions asked. If
not I guess I'll have to get Microsoft to come pick it up when they've finished
    eating their mince pies.

So with that in mind I think I'm going to get the extended warranty. I never
usually bother with electrical equipment, but the Xbox 360 seems to be so
flaky I think it's probably worth it. One of my friends is already on his
second Xbox 360 and another friend is having disk read errors......

I'm of the opinion that extended warranties aren't usually worth it. If you do make it through a year, you will more than likely have a decent machine and so won't go kaput at all (except for normal wear and tear, but this will happen anyway) and secondly even if you were unlucky enough to have to pay for a repair, it is unlikely to cost much more than the cost of the extended warranty in the first place. I've never bought one, and I own just about every gadget known to man! ;)

No need to worry about that yet mate, you have a 12 month warranty out of the box so dont give the extended warranty a second thought until November/December next year.

I have the extended warranty and it mainly means I won't mod the console for the foreseeable future.

Its only £59. I cant see repairs costing less than this? hard drive if that goes is the same price and it also cover controllers, it seems a great deal to me but i'd also be interested in other people opinions as it says it must be bought with in 10 days of purchase

It might say you have to do it within 10 days but you dont, you can extend the warranty anytime in the first year, I did mine in November and have a launch console.

I bought a launch day console and took out a two year warranty two weeks ago.
Its a good job i did because my console started freezing on christmas eve.
It ended up freezing after about ten minutes play so it was bricked.
I telephoned microsoft and they emailed the labels within one hour and the console is being collected today.
So people saying if it lasts over a year it will be ok is not true.
Get the extra warranty and have peace of mind.

I just sent in the leaflet but I have read that you can just ring the customer services number and ask to extend that way.

Are you saying you got a free extended warranty or that you have been using the 12 months warranty that everyone gets? because that expires the end of December and after that if anything goes wrong they can charge you for it to be fixed.

Slightly off topic but quick warranty related question. I won my 360 from Microsoft as a prize at work so dont have a receipt or purchase date etc. The manufacture date is june of this year I think so will my warranty run from then or will I have to call Microsoft with the serial number to see how long I have left on the warranty?

It should run for 12 months from the day you purchase it.

If you bought your 360 from comet or argos or could probaley get an extended warranty with them, apart from that just ring up MS or send off the leaflet when your 12 months are nearly up.
