I have a need to install Microsoft Office onto a mac laptop, which is the best way to do this?

The actual version of Office does not matter too much, so an earlier version than 2016 can be considered if I go for a local single version installation.

if office 365 proves to be the way for me to go, what happens when I stop paying a subscription, do I lose all access to Office ?

Can I stop and start the subscription for Office 365 as I need to, or is there a minimum subscription period.

Sorry, I obviously didn't make myself clear. I know that Office 365 is an online subscription service and that Office 2016 is a local one time installation. What I am trying to do is determine which is the best (most economical) way forward for me. I will only need to access MS Office on the mac every so often for about 2 to 4 months at a time.

Yes - there may be a grace period but the idea of 365 is you are continually paying for a licence. Stop paying, stop using.

You pay for a minimum of one month with no ongoing commitment.
