I have had a Linux personal laptop for over 10 years
Gaming PC is still windows, every 6-9 months I try Linux for gaming and it’s still not ready for the games I play
Work wise I have used Windows, Linux, macOS, Solaris through the years
I‘ve used Linux in one form or another since around 1992
Did someone suggest Linux? - the problem is that schools promote Windows ( AFAIK), so whilst Microsoft can tinker with the front-end it's not so often extended to actual work-programs. I understood that Germany runs the Civil-service on Linux . . it costs very little an updates are easily installed - so you don't get unnecessary scrapage of PCs - well, we are trying to preserve World Materials.
My Son’s school, like many is a big Google Classroom user with Chromebooks, so not a Windows promoter. His previous school used appropriate software, so a mix of computers and tablets.
When I worked for an online education services company, Apple and Microsoft were the darlings of education. For our services all that was needed was a web browser.
Different government departments in Germany keep flip-flopping backwards and forwards between Windows and someone’s version of Linux. Munich went back to windows, the expectation and rumours of them abandoning Linux again started in 2017.
Brief: Once the flagbearer of open source adoption, the city of Munich is finally shutting the door on Linux in order to welcome Windows. German city Munich was among the first to opt for Linux as the main operating system and adopt open source office product. After more than a

Linux can be free, as in cost, unless you want support, but like every OS updates can be straight forward or break things. My Linux laptop has actually given me more issues to resolve than my Windows pc after updates
Intel code updates keep breaking and then a few weeks later fixing my laptops ability to wake from sleep. It’s Intel code changes causing it, so it doesn’t matter which version of Linux I use, the issue always keeps coming up.
I've tried Ubuntu and it appears to work OK.../ but always I find I revert to Win - - - simply because specialist software is WIn.
Ubuntu is now Version 20, AFAIK.
If you want to get away from MS style control of your operating system, Ubuntu is one of the worst choices you can make. Canonical keep trying over and over to find a way to monetise Ubuntu. They previously involved Amazon in telemetry, data scraping and some worrying privacy concerns in an attempt to make money.
Currently while the rest of the Linux world is standardising on Flatpaks which are open and not controlled by a single company, Canonical rejects flatpaks and is forcing snaps by default. Canonical own and control the Snap App Store.
There was a time where I used Ubuntu for a few years and I would recommended it, but now it’s too much of a pain and mess of adding random repos to be worthwhile. The current long term is 22.04 and 23 is the latest release.
Mint and other derivatives are far better versions of Ubuntu than the actual Ubuntu.
Incidently, youngsters don't need a new interface to buy their first computer.... we stopped Manufacturers of cars from meddling with the basics - and the same should apply to a computer. The OS is only there to get it to work, once you've got past that ( and start working) the OS is in the background, where it should keep out of our way
When did car manufacturers ever stop meddling with the basics? They’re busy removing as many physical buttons as possible so it’s not possible to watch the road and change air con, radio station or every other useful function you could use a button or switch for while driving without looking away from the road at a touchscreen.
