I'm a bit gutted as postage has shot up over the last couple of days otherwise I would have ordered. It was indeed a cracking deal from Amazon US ....worked out about £250 for both the Ride and Kill boxsets inc delivery and customs charge. They're about £180 a piece from Amazon UK!

I placed my order for lightning about a month ago - amazon.com wanted $198. Less than £140. But that price includes first class shipping and the import taxes. I will update in a couple of weeks when the box set arrives

I take it you've seen the unboxing vid? It looks very nice and the live track playing sounds great! Trouble is I want both...can't pick one or the other and I just spent a small fortune on the Slayer Metal Eagle set which doesn't help!

Metallica: Ride the Lightning (Deluxe Edition)...

Thanx for the video. Didn't even know it was out there. I am sure I will end up owning kill em all too but lightning is too special for me. I guess I will add kill em after I add the muppets box set in my collection.

You don't think these things are gonna sell out and go up in value then? I know they are numbered but that doesn't mean they are particularly limited I guess. I'm guessing it will be quite a long time till we see the MOP box set.

Whats the print run on these? Another person here who didn't know they were coming out. TBH if there not mega limited i might hang on and try and pick them up if i go to America in October. Hopefully the exchange rate might be a bit better as well.

I read a comment on amazon saying 30000 but who knows where that figure came from originally. I also read from a more reliable source (someone who works for Metallica) that there were large numbers but he didn't give a figure. I'm also going to the US in October but I'm not sure the saving would be worth the hassle of lugging them about on my trip.

£141 delivered from Amazon.com with all taxes paid - about £30 cheaper than Amazon UK!

I'm just listening to some of the demos now. Well worth having if you're a big fan of the early stuff as I am but is it worth £150? I don't think so for the the music. For the cool packaging if you collect that sort of thing then certainly.

As for the remastered album, only played it very briefly and it sounded bloated with bass. I plan to try it on my other set ups once I've got over the fun of listening to all the bootlegs and demos but it seems, as others have posted elsewhere, that its another loudness war victim.

I have seen any official reviews yet. There's a few customer reviews on amazon.com (US site) though.

Regarding the "loudness war" comment by Lusankya.... The worst example should and must be Maiden's Book Of Souls..... The remastered cd version of ride the lightning sounds nothing like that.... The bass is heavier than I remember it but that is due to Ulrich's skills with the bass drum...the album sounds great....
    On another note....
Amazon is doing the deluxe remastered edition of kill em all for £15.99.... That is considerably less than what Apple or google are asking...
Had to buy it and had a listened to it.... The MP3 version sounds great....
So good that I drove to the nearest HMV and bought the single disc remastered edition of kill em all..
I am not sure if it is up to Fleming Rasmussen's standards but it sounded better than I remembered it

Actually I was responsible for that comment. The album hasn't been rerecorded so the increase in bass over how you remember it is nothing to due with Lars' drumming skills surely?

I've been listening to this album regularly since 85 and have various versions. The overbloated bass is due to the way they have remastered it. Not to say that it sounds as horrendous as some others have suggested elsewhere but it's not as good as it could be. I'm currently listening to a vinyl rip of the Music For Nations UK release...after turning it up to roughly match the level of the new remastered cd it beats it hands down.

Sorry Timmy C... I had a loooong day but I should have double checked...
On amazon.com someone responded to the loudness war comments and posted the levels of the tracks... They looked OK.....
What I meant was that Lars probably raised the bar a few notches on his tracks while remastering....

A vinyl rip? As a frame of reference? Too many variables don't you think?

I will have access to my LP collection in a few weeks so I would play both kill em all and ride the lightning and see if I can spot the differences...

...I'm just listening to the Live at the Hollywood Palladium 85 set for the first time. Started out a bit ropey but it really is very good indeed.

Well it's a very good vinyl rip...done by someone known to be one of the best in the game and his Metallica rips sound better than my original MFN cd copies which in turn sound better than any other cd copy I've had. I had hoped with all the money and access to studios the band have they could have improved on a rip of a 30 year old piece of vinyl!

Edit: I just took another look at the amazon reviews and came across this link. I've not looked into it further so no idea how reliable this info is but if it's accurate then it's quite interesting...
