I was a fan, up to and including The Black Album, then they went crap! IMHO, they have not made a decent album since, and St Anger is possibly one of the worst sounding CDs I have ever heard. They may still be good live, but I won't buy any more of their albums.

I'm sure you could download them for free from somewhere. I hear the drummer fully encourages that sort of thing!

i like some tracks, but i think on the whole their songs go on far too long, especially on st. anger, those songs just don't know when to end. It also affects their image in my eyes when you know they hate each other, and only stay together for the $$$

I agree with Simon6776 that after the Black Album they went crap. I still have all the albums as I bought them hoping that they'd got it back together again, but will think again before buying any more.
The reason the tracks seem over long on St Anger (in my view) is that they are boring ! The tracks on Justice are all long but they don't feel long to me as they are so good.

Yes, if only it had a decent production, Justice would be their best album, imo.

I'm in that minority that thinks Justice is actually very well produced. It sounds so unique, harsh and dry. That in itself creates power. Some of the riffing is just so clean and crunchy it's superb. Blackened is a great opener.

By the way, I didn't know they hated each other now. Maybe because they haven't made a good album sine Justice I guess. Black album was OK but no more. Stack it up against Puppets though and it crumbles.

Metallica have made some great tunes, Master of Puppets & Garage-Days are my all-time Metallica albums.

Stuff like Load, Re-Load and the S&M are still good albums, but then it's nice to change direction every now & then and do something different.

It's like any band people have different views on the music they produce, i like the long, slow tracks and the mega fast tracks as well........it's all down to a matter of taste, and you can't please everyone.

The other thing that you have to remember is Metallica have been producing music for 20 years now, and thats a blinkin' long time in the music world. There isn't many metal bands from the early 80's that are still together, or as successful as they were then, and have proberbly moved onto new projects.

    Just my thoughts..........

    Cheers

Agreed about ...and justice for all. Appearently the production is deliberately like that due the the fact that it was the album recorded shortly after the death of Cliff Burton and they levelled down the bass sort of as a mark of respect. It certainly hangs together well as an album. If I was a newbie i would buy in this order/

    1. ....And Justice for All
    2. Master of Puppets
    3. Metallica (Black album)
    4. Load
    5. Reload

St Anger or St inker  as ~I refer to it is a pretty awful attempt to do something a bit different. I understand that bands want to be creative and unpredictable but at least make it sound good.

    Here's my order :-
    1) master of puppets
    2) ride the lightening
    3) and justice....
    4) kill em all
    5) smell the glove / metallica

not bought (haven't heard) anything since the black/Metallica album
Am I missing anything ? (bearing in mind that I wasn't to impressed by it)

    Garage Days
    Load
    Re-Load
    S&M
    St-Anger

I think that is all the albums released since the "Black Album"

I rate "Ride The Lightning" as my favourite :)

Saw them at Reading last year and although they were good, all they did was churn through their back catalogue. Any band could churn through the Metallica back catalogue with a bit of energy and sound good.

Couldn't agree more! 'Ride the Lightning' was a fantastic album. I think the best followed by 'Master of Puppets'. I think they lost it after Cliff died though. I liked 'And Justice...' at the time but looking back I think I was just kiding myself as I had tickets to see them on the tour!

Metallica have become the very thing they used to detest;a corporate business.A much different band to the one that wasn't allowed to call their first album "Metal Up Your Ass".

Queensryche - now there's another band who haven't done a decent album in years. Operation: Mindcrime is the obvious pinnacle, but my favourite is Promised Land, and they haven't done anything worth listening to since, imo. Empire is fantastic on DVD-A. :smashin:
