This is the new Samsung HD950 DVD player with DVI and HDMI - yes it will be compatible with the RD50 via DVI as it supercedes the HD945 which only had HDMI and the HD735 which only had DVI and both worked with all the current HDMI/DVI HDCP DLP TV's.

Well spotted - and at £130 that's a very good price! The HD945 was reviewed in last month's Home Cinema Choice magazine and they gave it 4.5/5 for picture, 4/5 for sound, 5/5 for features and 5/5 overall. quote "the [HDMI/DVI picture] performance will blow you away!"

    Cheers

    Hi Michelle

Nice colour on the samsung, they definately have a good designer working for them. :)

It looks fine for the RD50, it has a DVI and HDMI so there is no problems. I dont know how it will handle region 1 playback though. But if you havent any region 1 dvd's I wouldnt worry.

Its not multi region, so you will need a hack to play R1.

Even if you make it multi region it won't play R1 properley on the RD50.
so stick to R2 dvd's and you'll be allright.
I don't know anything about this player but from what Kableman say's it should be a good bet.:)

    Hi Michelle

Seems like a very good find for the price and is probably better in some respect compared to the Pio 575A I own.

However, it up-converts to HD but does NOT play HD DVD or Blu-ray so you'll have to buy another one to play true HD media (I'm not 100% sure of this though) but for the price it is pretty good.

This is true. It will upscale to 720p or 1080i but will not play HD. But at £130 its cheap enough so i'd buy it now and upgrade once prices for HD-DVD or Blu-Ray calm down in a year - not to mention the technology settling down and one standard wins out. An upscaling DVD player will be the best bet for a good while.

    Cheers

I'm sure HDTVs upscale all non HD feeds anyway. Perhaps other upscalers may be better ofcourse.

It seem's wrong advertising these players as high def when all they do is upscale the image to a high def resolution of 1280x720 which is what my RD50 is doing now with Eastenders.
I imagine a lot people buy this expecting it to work miracles.

I rang the place up about the Sammy after i had ordered online. What wasnt good is the fact online it does not mention how long you have to wait.

After a chat with the man on the phone, he told me the Sammy wasnt in until May. I couldnt risk that as i wanted it to be here when my Optoma arrives. So i cancelled the order, he wasnt bothered about it, and the money refunded to my husbands card :D

I think we are going with the DVD we saw at Vans, cable from Mark already ordered...we can always upgrade later on.

yesterday we saw a Panny with an £800 pioneer dvd (showing a film in a hifi shop), it was no contest, Vans DVD on the Optoma was fabulous to that

    Thanks for replies :smashin:

Ah that explains it. I was looking at the site you posted earlier as i'm now looking to buy one of these and I noticed that the spec of the player on their site is the US version as it doesn't have a SCART connection. So they must have swiped the spec from the US in advance knowing they would be stocking the new model when it comes out.

I think you've made the right choice. BTW, you can get the Pio 575A for under £100 from Richer Sounds.

I bet you can't wait much longer for the RD50, hehe.
