Mercedes R Class 350CDI - Opinions

Just came back from a test drive in the R-Class 350CDI Grand Edition and must admit we actually really liked it.

The only other car we think comes close is the new Discover 4 but for the live of me I just can't negotiate a deal with anyone and the discounts are not good enough in my opinion...I mean 47k for the HSE which then still needs window tinting etc is getting a bit silly. And looking at disco3.co.uk there seem to be quite a few issues with it...

Has anyone owned an R-Class (the current 7 seat version, not the old 6 seat versions...). How reliable has it been?

Also does the Mercedes Command system allow video out to have some aftermarket screens in the back? I think Mercedes price for 1600 for two screens with a single dvd is just plain stupid and we'd prefer them in the headrest and being able to operate from the front....Also ideally (as the girls do now in my car) have different DVD's on each screen....

Look forward to any opinion...

Never owned either but smthg you might consider (if you are looking to buy) is the residual value.

Looking at similar but not exactly the same vehicles;

According to "a guide"

a 2009 10k Disco3 2.7d HSE will be £33,125 (trade in) vs list new of £45290. Amount retained = 73%

an 2009 10k MB R320CDI Sport will be £27475 (trade in) vs list of £43,572. Amount retained = 63%

Thats £5,650 diffrence in favour of the Disco3.

You might not get a great deal on o a Disco4, but the residual will be better in the long run....

Good point well made! That's the discount difference gone in one go...Will look into the three year projection...And ofcourse the Disco is at the beginning of its life...

Interesting stuff...

i did have a Disco4 on test though and it is vastly superior than the 3 - especially the finish quality - lets say it less agricultural and far more refined....

if you go for one, be sure to get the dealer to throw in the extended warranty - its something of value (really only for big faults) and may be one alternative to getting a discount off the list price.

personally, when buying a new/nearly new car - i find the comment "you should be able give me an extended warranty - if you have faith in your product, you'll be glad that i wont have to call on it then"....has generally worked for me in the past....

We fully agree, the disco 3 interior looks like my first sony or something from the early learning centre and could not have tempted us to part with our money. And then I haven't even started about the engine...The disco 4 however is a different story, although I still think they could have done better with some of the systems, I mean the resolution of that LCD panel between the dials is just diabolical, my ZX81 was less blocky ;) Ok not really but you get my point...And the 3.0TDV6 is a fast improvement and not bad, but my ideal (especially for 47k) would be the TDV8 in the discovery...The 350CDI definitely feels smoother and more powerful in my opinion...

I know you didn't ask for the 6 seater views, but I have one and I really like it. Had a go in the 7 seater and just as good.

Cool. What is it you like about it especially? Do you have the 4matic or 2wd? Has it proven reliable? What kind of real life mpg do you get?

I actually had a look at that using what car depreciation calculator and it is not as bad as it seems from your example...

Car Depreciation Calculator Results - What Car?

Year 1 Merc 53% retained and LR 64%
Year 2 Merc 47% and LR 55%
Year 3 Merc 39% and LR 43%
Year 4 Merc 32% and LR 33%

So percentage wise the LR wins...However when you look at absolute figures, you have to outlaw more capital at the outset for the LR, and although you retain more you actually also loose more money of the LR In year 3 it has cost about £3k more even though it retains more of its value...And then considering the Merc actually provides discounts against list of about £6k the finances start going in the favour and over 3 years is about £9k cheaper which is a decent holiday or two....

Hmmm choices...If only the seats in the Q7 were useable ;)

Fair point - you are always going to get different results from different places. I can tell you (as an industry insidier) that What Car valuations are not as accurate as some others imho and that they are consumer values rather than dealer values.

Consumer values are often adjusted so that whne customeres walk into a dealership with the consumer values, there is still some margin for the dealer who will use industry/trade values. Consumer values come from What Car and Parkers for example whilst the main recognised dealer/trade values come from Glass's.

Your math is correct though, but personally I wouldn't hold What Car values in much credance.

So where you gonna go on holiday then??!?!?!?!

Probably out usual Italy, but since my boat will drink about 14gallons/hour I can use the spare cash :D at current Euro exchange and high unleaded prices....

But yes you are correct about those kind of prices and comparisons, it is always hard to compare and look into the future...And the R will be a bit more specialist to get rid off compared to a Disco....

I guess I should get a Disco 4 XS but then will have to add toys onto it, but still can't get the arm rests as that is HSE only....Aargh...Maybe I should just buy my wife a Golf to bridge the next year until some discounts become available on the Disco...

You might find that at the time of the new plate in March, you'll get a good "deal" (relatively speaking of course!).

For what its worth, I would take the LR over the MB but thats just personal prefrence. Styling been one of the main....
