As an add on to JammyB's question about size of SD Card - can anyone recommend a device that can backup SD cards without the use of a computer/laptop/tablet etc. ?

The reason I ask is that I am going on Safari later in the year and will probably have a couple of 16GB and a couple of 32GB SD cards for my 550D and my son's Bridge camera (about 100GB in total = 2500+ pictures total). I do not really want to take a laptop (but will if there is no other way) but for peace of mind would like to backup the SD Cards at the end of each day to be safe.

    Any suggestions gratefully received.

Hyperdrive & Nexto DI, depends on how deep your pockets are.

Seems to be one of those areas that highlight the economies of scale. You can buy an ugly box with a memory card slot and a low capacity HDD for several hundred pounds OR use a laptop...

While the former is purpose built and smaller and will doubtless have unique features, I can't help feeling a laptop has quite a lot of other advantages, like having a copy of lightroom installed.

Same reason people take compacts & M4/3 on holiday instead of a DSLR setup and pay the extra for 2 systems. Convenience, nobodies going to spend time in LR while on holiday.

Depends on the people and the holiday I think. People like to edit a couple of images quickly and upload to their travel blogs or facebook. I'd rather spend a bit of time in lightroom than surfing channels trying to find something watchable in english, with the sound low because my other half is asleep.

I am, but it's not always a very exciting night.

I do need to justify the SLR Magic 25mm T0.95 lens I've got my eye on though.

Funny this coming up. Many moons ago I used to use a Vivitar DMD-P20 media player. I used the memory slots for backing up pictures on the move. Went in the draw a few yeasr ago, but only yesterday pulled it out to see if i can upgrade the HD to make it usefull again

This is why I bought many extra cards. I still carry the laptop, iPad etc etc with me. I also bought a Archos 5 for this but never used it. Realised afterwards that it was much cheaper to just buy more cards.one more gizmo that I will store and never use.
