MCE, S/PDIF output "choppy"

Okay, I've had this working but over the last couple of days it's packed in (when, who knows!)

MCE, AC3-Filter, fortissimo III sound card connected via S/PDIF to AVamp...

When I play a rip, other than a WMV, the sound is just white noise, chopping about 5-10 times a second (almost machine-gun style).

Now, WMV plays fine, but I understand the 5.1 would be down-converted to stereo, then sent over the S/PDIF i/f.

DVD playback is fine, but then the AC3 stream should be sent unmolested to the S/PDIF interface.

DVD rips, limited to AC3/5.1 (DVD decrypter) give the machine-gun stutter. Surely the route from a ripped DVD to the AC3 encoder is the same as the route from the DVD playback?, or am I missing something (obviously I am).

Anyway, I need to get a remote control, so I'm inclined to buy a Terratec Aureon 7.1 PCI Sound Card, to replace the fortissimo, and to provide dolby live encoding, is this likely to cure my problems, in anyone's opinion?
