what are the major benifits if any of having sky + over a dvd recorder and sky?
i assume you can use programme delivery control on sky programs so you can set it to record in advance does the dvd recorder offer anything less?
if its stupid just say i can see the point in both but im wondering what would be the benifits if just one was bought
    thanks

Well SKY+ is mainly for time shifting programming, it's not a tool for archieving programs like a DVD recorder is.

SKY+ has a fully integrated EPG and twin tuners so press R on the progam in the planner and the machine records it while allowing you to continue watching another SKY channel or record a second and playback a recording.

Personally unless you really have the need to have portable copies of a program then SKY+ is the way to go, it's sole purpose it to allow you to tailer your viewing from the hundreds of channels with no loss of video/audio quality all in a one box solution.

There is a good argument to be had that having both SKY+ and a DVD recoder offers you the best solution not only for time shifting but also for archieving to a permenant medium for yourself or friends.

Sky+ will also get rid of the annoying red dot for you when you record programs.

Now all they got to do is come up with a section to remove all the "dogs" from the recordings and bingo, one hell of a system :D

    Digital Onscreen Graphic.

Computer generated channel idents hard encoded into the broadcast, normally in an upper corner and sometimes animated, you've seen them:)
Self promotion more or less 24/7 and somehow are not included in a commercial channels regulated amount of advertising time, we would soon get unblemished screens if they had to choose between paid for third party adverts and a gawdy block of colour masking the picture.
