    Hi, this is probably a stupid question but I'll ask it anyway :)

    Apparently my line is only capable of a maximum download speed of 20MB, which seems a little on the slow side. What exactly governs this value, and is there anyway to increase this speed besides moving house?

    Thanks.

    Distance from telephone exchange.

    Copper/fiber optic or a combination of both used on your line.

    It all makes a difference to your maximum download speeds so you may have to move house or wait for planned upgrades (if any) in your area.

    Thanks for the reply mate. Just discovered that 20mb is my estimated speed, not the maximum so not as bad as I thought. Still it will be a big upgrade from my 1.5-2mb Demon service; can't believe I was paying £18/pm for that :eek:.

    You cheeky bugger :nono::D

    I've been doing a few line tests online and getting estimated 20-28MB speeds which is a nice upgrade for me :smashin:.

    20Mbps is higher than the UK average and very good for ADSL. Unless you're in one of the areas that either has FTTC or Virgin's network connected - both of which have a long way to go until they cover the entire country - you're not going to get better.

    Not that there are many things that can actually take advantage of a faster connection. Faster is nice, but 20Mbps is more than fast enough for almost everything.

    This 20MB value is for fibre, not ADSL. The exchange is 2km away from my house hence the poor speeds.

    The distance to the exchange for fibre does not matter. In this case its the distance to the green cabinet in the street which for you sounds like its a reasonable way away.

    If it was ADSL 20meg is excellent. You have to live practically next door to the exchange to get it lol.
