I wondered how long I could have a DVI-D cable from the back of my PC?
The quoted maximum lengths from various sources are wooly.
From Wikipedia, Digital Visual Interface : In general, cable lengths up to 4.5 m (15 ft) work for displays at resolutions of 1920 x 1200. Cable lengths up to 15 m (50 ft) can be used with displays at resolutions up to 1280 x 1024.
All with the caveat : it depends on the quality of your transmission.

I hoped to use a 15m cable plugged into my HD4850. Plenty of cable suppliers sell high quality cables up to 25m.

Has anyone here used similar length (or longer) DVI-D cables with success?
    Thanks.

Yep - they do a 15m for £110. I cant spend big money, otherwise I'll be approaching the realms of extenders and KVM/IP ;)

Anyone here do a distance like this straight off their graphics card? Or tried and found it flakey?

ive got a 10meter RGB cable running straight from an x700pro to a 26inch lcd HD tv image is pretty darn good. i can run at 1080i or 720p (1080i is the highest the tv will go but im pretty sure the cable will do 1080p no troubles)

a quick google search seems to sujest that 9-10meters is the max for a strong clear signal and once you get over 12meters you start to get problems. some people are saying if you use very low loss high quality cable you should be fine but they dont come cheap. just a thought is there a way to transmit the signal wirelessly??? you can get wireless dvi senders. or another option is to get dvi to cat5/6 converter's
