I'm s bit stumped, even if you ignore the dogs issue.

Presumably the "dogs" bit is a mistake and they actually mean "horses".

126 eyes in total means there is a total of 63 horses and humans (126/2 = 63).

(x*4)+(y*2) = 196
x+y = 63

where "x" is number of horses and "y" is number of humans

That can be simplified:

(x*2)+y = 98

And that's where my algebra runs out.

Thanks. I was struggling and my 8 year old daughter who's homework it was had no idea.

yep, id use simultaneous equations for that one myself though, currently teaching in y4 (8-9), i wouldnt expect any of the kids in my year group to use them...the approach i'd expect would be would be kungfupro's logical one...
