Mates iPhone problem getting 3G.

My mate had an old LG veiwty on a O2 contract. It still had 7 months to run so he bought a pay as you go iPhone. Now he's inserted his old contract sim (which he said had unlimited browsing in his tarrif) but all he gets is the little round dot. It never says 3G.
Can he get 3G or will he have to live with the little dot until his contract runs out ?

It will probably be the SIM or lack of a decent signal, Apple have just released a new firmware that should resolve some connectivity issues though so it would be worth updating the firmware.

Has he set/checked the APN network settings?

3G sim - not sure ?
It came with 3.1 pre installed
I used the settings in the iPhone FAQ thread for o2 phones.
By default it was set like any iPhone but when connecting to safari it would say cannot connect.
Settings are
· APN address: wap.o2.co.uk
· Username : o2wap
· Password: password

I would say its the sim not being a 3G sim thats the problem.

Can he get 3G on the Viewty ?
If he does have you switched 3G on in the iphones settings ?
