Mass effect porn - americans conservatives are not happy

Now Fox News get in on the action, these people create far more desire to do physical damage than any computer game ever could.

What. Ill informed sensationalist journalism on FOX NEWS. I never thought i'd see the day. ;)

I cannot believe how dumb those people are. To be against the game is one thing but to do so having no experience of it and absolutely no idea what you're talking about is just irresponsible for someone in the media.

At least it makes me appreciate the BBC.

Oh and if they consider that "graphic sex" then they're doing it wrong.

Edit: I did notice in the comments section that disgruntled gamers were going onto amazon.com to rate Cooper Lawrence's book as one star. Well they certainly stuck to their word - have a quick look how many recent one star slatings there are. :D

I just loved the bit on the review by a Mike Sanchez that castigates her for using sex to sell the book by having a woman on the cover :D

I did think of one very small potential get out clause for some of these idiots critics...you could just about argue that there were graphics having sex - maybe that's what they meant.

That Fox thing was interesting though, as some of these 'commentators' had clearly done no research on what they were talking about, and weren't at all embarassed by this clear lack of any journalistic rigour.

The reviews are better than the book!
(I didn't bother to read the book, it's just my opinion)

"I cannot believe the smugness of this woman. The cover of her book, the bashing of a videogame that she hasn't even played! The blatant disreguard that the generation of fathers that are in existance are FORM THE NINTENDO GENERATION. Meaning that we GREW UP ON VIDEO GAMES AND WE DO PLAY WITH AND WITHOUT OUR KIDS!!!!!! As a video game store owner AND a loving father I felt it my duty to review her book, which i know nothing about. just as she knows nothing about us the gamer generation! I find it very liberating to have not read a book yet get so much out of it. In stead of actually reading the book I have taken words out of it and asked my self....huh? The part about "...a female should always have sexual intercourse with a fully matured manatee while stimulating herself with a small chipmunk" was very confusing. What is so overachieving about that? Why not take your ambitions higher and make it a walrus...they have tusks! Although i did find relief that "for every overachieving woman there are four underachieving guys that she will be willing to have random and simulteaneous unprotected sex with!!!!" There is hope for me yet!!!! I will get my day in the sun! Actually....I don't even know if those words are in the book. I didn't do my research. Well according to the author, only fat, ugly, low self-esteem, and victim type women are reading her book, not well rounded open individuals!!! Oops, I'm not sure if she said that either....I really should DO MY RESEARCH before I talk about something...huh? I'm a game store owner...and I approved this message!"

She has 350+ 1 star reviews so far for her amazing book.

Haha, just read some of the reviews and felt obliged to give it 1 star ;)

Just doing my bit, lol :rotfl:

It's not just a few Americans who are at this. There are many psychologists (amongst my most hated people) in this country who feel the same way - not just about Mass Effect, but games in general. I would be surprised if any of these idiots had ever played a video game in their lives but it doesn't stop several newspapers quoting them and taking their 'expert' opinions as fact.

The Mass Effect story is simply one example out of hundreds showing how some journalists take something harmless/non-existent and exaggerate/invent it. Not only is the sex scene in Mass Effect tame (jaggy virtual ass & sideboob) but it wasn't like you didn't have to put in some effort in order to be 'rewarded' with seeing it. I have no doubt whatsoever that you have to talk to Ashley/Liara for a greater length of time in the game to get in the sack with one of them than many men do with their prospective one-night stands on the average Friday night. A hell of a lot more time...

For the lesser firewall abled folk...

US, January 23, 2008 - Fox News recently aired an alarmist segment on Mass Effect claiming the game featured full nudity and sex. The reporter also said critics claim the game is being marketed to children. The gaming community has been abuzz with talk of the segment, which many view as containing several inaccuracies. Fox News did not try to clarify any of these allegations. Fox News also used footage of the game that was originally shown on IGN.com, although it was obtained without IGN's approval. Both Fox News and IGN are owned by News Corp.

Electronic Arts (EA), parent company of Mass Effect developer BioWare, has responded to the Fox News Channel (FNC). Jeff Brown, EA's VP of Communications, has issued a letter to the channel asking it to correct these falsities and misstatements that the publisher feels have disparaged its property. Among Brown's points:

"Your headline above the televised story read: 'New videogame shows full digital nudity and sex.'

Fact: Mass Effect does not include explicit or frontal nudity. Love scenes in non-interactive sequences include side and profile shots – a vantage frequently used in many prime-time television shows. It's also worth noting that the game requires players to develop complex relationships before characters can become intimate and players can chose to avoid the love scenes altogether.

FNC voice-over reporter says: 'You'll see full digital nudity and the ability for players to engage in graphic sex.'

Fact: Sex scenes in Mass Effect are not graphic. These scenes are very similar to sex sequences frequently seen on network television in prime time.

FNC reporter says: 'Critics say Mass Effect is being marketed to kids and teenagers.'

Fact: That is flat out false. Mass Effect and all related marketing has been reviewed by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) and rated Mature – appropriate for players 17-years and older. ESRB routinely counsels retailers on requesting proof of age in selling M-rated titles and the system has been lauded by members of Congress and the Federal Trade Commission. In practical terms, the ratings work as well or better than those used for warning viewers about television content.

Other sources used in the segment made similar incorrect statements about the game. Judging by the inaccuracy of their comments, they have had zero experience with Mass Effect and are largely ignorant about videogames, the people who play them, and the ESRB system that governs their ratings and sales."

Brown theorizes that some of the negative attention TV news gives to videogames may be because viewers are spending more time playing games than watching their show.

"As videogames continue to take audiences away from television, we expect to see more TV news stories warning parents about the corrupting influence of interactive entertainment. But this represents a new level of recklessness.

"Do you watch the Fox Network? Do you watch Family Guy? Have you ever seen The OC? Do you think the sexual situations in Mass Effect are any more graphic than scenes routinely aired on those shows? Do you honestly believe that young people have more exposure to Mass Effect than to those prime time shows?

"This isn't a legal threat; it's an appeal to your sense of fairness. We're asking FNC to correct the record on Mass Effect."

Good to see EA standing up and giving the Fox network the finger

If you read the reviews one of the is from the Vice president of communications from EA

There's 48 pages of reviews .. I don't suppose you kept a copy of what he wrote, or havea direct link to his review? :)

Sorry dude, I went to have a look for you and for some reason there is only 22 reviews now, I wonder why that is:D

Apparently the lady in question has changed her opinion after doing something totally amazing - research.

http://dubiousquality.blogspot.com/

Neatly enough, Bill Harris did ponder whether the caning that Cooper Lawrence's book was taking on Amazon.com was helping her to make this giant leap into something like objective comment :D
