Marvel's MCU Phase 4

Thank the lord I'm not the only one.

Thats the thing though isn't it? It won't just be films, it will be TV series as well. Its going to cost a small fortune to follow them all and it just feels so commercialised. Apart from Thor and Guardians of the Galaxy, the rest of the third tier characters just fail to excite and feel so anti-climatic after the epic climax of the last phase. :(
People thought the same about the Guardians of the Galaxy. Marvel Studios' superpower is turning niche properties into gold dust.

Doubtful they can come close to the juggernaut that was The Infinity Saga.
Marvel make fun movies, so I'm in. Doctor Strange 2 is going to be dope.

I think that's the thing, the Infinity Saga was just off the charts, can it really be bettered?

I don't believe so with what I've seen so far.

I'm not sure either it possibly can be without Evans and Hemsworth. Keep seeing rumours Downey Jr. isn't finished, but it's doubtful he'd have any major part in another saga.

Looking forward to a few of what they've announced, but it'll take something very special to pull me back in like I was.

Galactus would be better than the Infinity Saga for me.

It is definitely going to be extremely difficult to replicate what was achieved in the last decade, and I do agree that the slate is based on a 3rd tier of characters, as opposed to a 2nd-tier for the Infinity Saga, because 1st-tier was already licensed out.

But ...
The Infinity Saga was only a throwaway plot and teaser in the Avengers, fully at the end of Phase1 of the initial movies. Even the Tesseract was seemingly setup initially telegraphed as a modern take on the Cosmic Cube, rather than an Infinity Stone. So if you want to compare, you can only judge at the end of 2021, having seen the initial 2 years of build-up, character establishing movies.

And ...
RDJ was in obscurity when cast as Iron Man, most general movie-goers had forgotten he existed. Chris Evans was not a household name, and Hemsworth was virtually an unknown. So again if you remember where everything sat when the MCU began, sitting now on judgement on films and plot lines and any over-reaching arc, nobody knows much of anything about, and already believing it to be automatically inferior is harsh.

I personally like the idea of the Galactus story being introduced as it is an iconic story for the FF and hasn’t been done. But I can’t help thinking the Kree/Skrull War, possibly combined with Secret Invasion for the Earth-based movies is where we are heading, based on recent movies, held together by combination of FF and Captain Marvel/Eternals/Guardians and New Avengers forming. I think X-Men will be held back until after all this.

I'm sure we'll all watch them but doubt they will have the impact of the run that has just finished. How could they? Galactus, his heralds, the Silver Surfer and the FF with a few others thrown in given the Marvel treatment would have been good, or and if not continued to be excellent.

It definitely makes sense for the X Men to be held back. After Dark Phoenix bombed, Marvel Studios will want to wait a while for the tarnished reputation DP gifted the X Men franchise to wear off.

With the Fantastic Four it's already four years since Fan4stic, and by the time the MCU reboot comes out at least seven years will have passed. That's enough time for audiences to forget how terrible the last take was (audiences who may not be familiar of the difference between an MCU film and a non-MCU Marvel movie).

It made £246m in worldwide box office takings. No Endgame to be sure. But a bit harsh to say it bombed.

There is some wisdom that a movie needs to make double production budget at worldwide box office to just break even. I think the production cost circa $200m, so it fell way short of the $400m it allegedly needed to not lose money.

Dark Phoenix grossed $252M at the Worldwide Box Office.
Grossed is not profit. It did not make £246M

Considering that it cost $200M to make, then at least another $100M easily on promotion, it was a complete and utter disaster. Easily able to be called a bomb.

I've got Dark Phoenix sitting there to watch, and I just cannot motivate myself to watch it.

I hadn't realised it had done quite so poorly at the box office.

I expected it be be awful, crap even, just like the Last Stand and so waited for its home release (USA).
I went into it with very low expectations but came out pleasantly surprised.

Spoilers for other MCU films

This, this is the one.

I’ve said many times, I see phase 4 as building a New Avengers, and I would hope that the Secret Wars premise gets us seeing Old Avengers versus New Avengers, with the previous actors returning for a swan-song payday. The original SW story wont translate well to screen, and theres nothing particularly new about Heroes versus Villains on a bigger scale. But leaning into the modern SW which leaned into the Multiverse and Cosmic, both staples of the way Phase 4 looks to be building, I can see it being a reality.

It is much better than it's reputation suggests. Some of it is really good. Give Wolverine Origins a watch to remind yourself what a bad X Men movie looks like and then give it a go :)

Think the film was tarnished by X-Men Apocalypses and preconceived ideas before it was even seen, I also dont think Apocalypses was as bad as it was made out to be although thought they messed up with the final battle and as it was not as good as the first 2 in this history got more black marks that it really deserved.
Box office not always the best indication of a films good or bad and I always think the film before in a franchise can have effects on the box office of the following.
Dark Phoenix is a lot better than The Last Stand which made over twice its budget, may be audiences were not ready for a re telling of the Dark Phoenix saga. Which by rights should not be a stand alone film. The Cartoon series of the story the nearest they came to the original story and the best committed to film.
