    A query from a newbie...

Home Cinema's review of the Marantz SR5400 states that it has THX Select. This is in disagreement with the specs on Marantz's website. Does anyone know the truth? Are there different versions of the SR5400 out there, some with THX Select and some without?

    Thanks,

    Mike

It's a mistake, the Onkyo in the test is THX select, the reviewers have got them mixed up.

It does make you wonder... If you're buying on the strength of a review and the reviewer can't even remember which offering had which features... Urk!

I'm confused too. The product spec for the SR5400 at http://www.marantz.com/hifi/europe/ states that it does have a THX certification & THX is listed as one of it multichannel/surround modes.

Do you see a THX badge?

Well that's why I'm confused !!! (for crying out loud), no badge and yet the manufacturers own web site says it is THX certified. As you implied, for this price Marantz would put a wapping great badge on the front as it would be a major selling point. So is this a mistake on Marantz own website I wonder.

It's a question that's been asked several times on the forum before.

Thanks Dimmy. I have been ploughing through the many very helpful threads on the SR5400 and couldn't have picked up on it. Basically I am about to purchase my first amp and am torn between the Yamaha DSPAX640SE and the Marantz SR5400. I am pretty set on the MS Premiere + speaker package although it will put me a bit over budget. Fresh from Marantz website after reading about the THX certification I picked up on this thread hence here is confused lil' ole' me. I guess it just comes down to personal opinion at the end of the day, though I still can't decide.

Dillz - I think your confusion is caused by the layout of the spec list on the Marantz website. There a 2 columns, the left hand one has a list of features, TLAs, buzzwords etc., and the right hand column indicates the level of support for that feature. Against 'THX' the right hand column is blank, which is ambiguous - it should contain a '-'.

    Pendantically yours,

    Mike

MikeBz : You are sooo right. Thanks for clearing that one up for me. Must admit I feel a bit of a muppet now. Perhaps time to get the contact lenses updated.

Bah, THX certification doesn't really mean much unless your DVD player, speakers and room setup are also THX-certified.

IMO THX certification is a little plaque they paste on the front of an amp to drive up the price.
