Marantz SR5200 sub pre-out problem.

Hi,,,I just got my new Denon DVD-1920 today and connected it to my Marantz sr5200. I want to use the internal decoders in the denon-player for most playback features so I used the analog out 5.1 connections to connect to the reciever.

Everything works just fine apart from the sub doesnt work at all. I have tested different cables. When using the built in decoders (in the amp) it works fine even the pre-out sub channel. When I choose direct 7.1 input (external dac's) I get no base. I have checked that the dvd-player send a sub-signal and that works fine (connected the dvd-player directy to the input on the sub and got the test-signal fine).

So to recap,,,no pre-out sound from the reciever when using external dac's. All other channels that use internal amp-power (no pre out) but external analog signal source work fine.

Have I missed something? I have messed around with the settings on the amp but not succeded to get anything.

I'll ask the obvious; while you were 'messing around' did you go 'Subwoofer - YES' in the 'Speaker Size' menu?

Yes I did,,,that is the strange thing,,,it works when using internal amp decoders and ONLY the pre-out connected sub doesnt work when using analog input (instead of internal dac's).

The amp also has a souce-direct feature that has been known to turn off subwoofer's when being "on". I have ofcourse tried various common and by now some uncommon settings to get it working but with no luck.

Is there any way to verify where there the fault lies?

What source are you playing (DVD,CD,SACD etc)? Also, what speaker settings have you selected in the player (Small,Large etc)?

What source,,,hmm not sure what you mean but with dvd 5.1 and with sacd 5.1 I want to use dac's in DVD-player. When playing regular cd I will use dac's in amp to get the sub to kick in to fill out regular 2ch sound. Still even in test-mode when dvd-player send out tone to adjust speaker levels I do get a sub-signal (in manual testing) out from the dvd but it sort of disappears in amp.

I have small speaker setting which autmatically sets the sub to "yes" I have experimented with big speaker setting and switched from yes to no a few times just to see if it had gotten "stuck" in a setting but nothing seems to help.

thanks for relpying

I mean't what have you got playing in the DVD to test if the sub is working or not? Is it a DVD disc, an SACD disc?? The speaker settings will also affect just how much bass is being redirected to the sub channel. Are you getting ANY sub output at all or is it just very low?

Try setting all the speakers to small and all bass to the sub. You may have to increase the SW channel output from the player as well as increasing the SW channel of the EXT IN on your Amp.

Confused but happy. Last night I gave up "fiddeling" with the settings and went to work. (working nights right now) This evening I for some reason felt like putting in a SACD just to again hear what it sounded like without my subwoofer. Pressed the 7.1 input button and to my surprise the sub was playing?!?!?!

I dont know why it plays now and not earlier,,,I didnt change any cables or settings.
I thought only computers had ghosts in them,,,he he.

I just hope it will continue to work.

Thanks for the replies.
