On my Marantz SR4300, with "no sub" selected, its only possible to set the rear surrounds to "none" or "small". Apparently if a sub is fitted then you get the option to set them to "large" (I don't have a sub myself).

This question was raised by someone else in another forum and it became clear that several SR4300 owners were reporting the same behaviour. No one seems sure if its supposed to be like this or if its a bug/defect.

    Cheers,

    Paulus.

    I am that someone else.
Doesn't anybody know anything about this? How about all you SR 4300 owners out there? Can you at least confirm this problem?

As the SR4200 is basically the same, it would be great if some SR4200 owners could confirm if theirs does the same.

paulus ... I don't think the SR4200 is basically the same as the SR4300 ... in fact I'm not sure much of it has been reused ... the SR4300 offers 6.1 decoding and is probably closer to the SR5200 and the SR5300 than the SR4200.

I was always led to believe that apart from the addition of 6.1 they were basically the same. They certainly look the same externally but I'm no expert and you may be right.

I'd still love to know if the SR4200 has the same rear speaker options with no sub fitted.

Someone just replied in another forum that the 4200 does not have this problem. With no sub, None, Small and Large is available for the surround speakers.

I can back this up. I've had my 4200 set with large front/rear and no sub since I bought it, unfortunately. Keep spending my sub money on useless rubish like carpets and alike. Room acoustics improving though :)

I'm having my supplier looking into this, but it's taking time.

BTW. What is Marantz going to say, do you think? "Yes, it's a bug. Sorry, have an SR 5300 for the price of a 4300 for your inconvenience"? Or "It's not a bug, it's a feature. Live with it"?

    /David
