Marantz AV Tuner Amps Reliability

I was intending to upgrade to a Marantz SR5400 Tuner/Amplifier but my local HIFI Store (Movement-Audio) advised that they no longer stock them as they have had too many faulty returns. They state that this is only a problem with the A/V units.
Can anyone provide further information on this.

I've got an old SR7200 that I'm selling because of an upgrade and I've never had any bother at all with it.

Maybe it's just the SR5400 model.

See if you can find some site with user reviews on it, that normally gives a good idea.

Rich.

I was not too clear. They no longer stock any Marantz A/V Receiver Amplifiers not just the SR5400.
I have checked multiple reviews and have not found any reported reliability problems.

Very strange on the tuner prob. Just salesman speak - forget it.
Likewise my local store said H/K no longer make good stereo as they've moved into HT. This is obviously not true as there stereo on HT stuff is excellent whatever you think of the looks. It's just all about whom they want to stock, that's all.

I have a Marantz SR4300 at the moment, just ordered the SR7400 this week.

Only reason for the change is for an upgrade, never had any probs with the Marantz, and I know a few other people with SR4300's and above and no problems what-so-ever.

Salivating at the anticipation of the SR7400, can't wait to unwrap the beast and let it rip :):):)

Had three of Marantz SR-5300 for use in a second room, all faulty, in the end received refund without quibble from RS.
Dolby Digital / DTS drop-outs were main problem.

I've had an SR7300 for about 10 months and had no problems at all (including the reported centre hum).

Its an outstanding piece of kit especially if you enjoy music as well as AV.

I think that gringottsdirect must have been very unlucky.

I've had my Marantz SR-5300 for over a year now & it's superb - no problems at all.

I agree it is superb, especially @ £269.00, the price I paid price at Richer Sounds, by the way all three were brand new boxed complete with little green updated stickers.
I wanted a fourth but RS had no stock, they told me they were no longer ranging that model because of too many returns. I was so pleased with it while it worked properly that I would have been very happy to try another SR-5300. I also rang Marantz, they confirmed drop-outs were an issue.
Incidentally, the problem wasn't the bits of sound missing, it was the very loud shriek that accompanied the signal locking on again, like a maximum volume distorted high pitch tone that threatened all six speakers. Every time it happened I had to rush to the Marantz and switch it off as it also locked out the remote.
This took place over a year ago, my posts at the time are here somewhere.
Pentode, I'm pleased yours is working great ! :smashin:

My first SR5300 went back it had an issue in Dolby Digital EX mode when no sub was selected, it was changed without a problem I have not had one issue with the current one.

Kazman - Can you please let me know what you think of the 7400 in stereo compares to the 4300 when you get hold of it

Will do pwiles

Expecting delivery early this week, most likely be Tuesday.

Going to let it run in for a few days first, then bombard it with my test discs :).

The SR4300 was quite good with stereo for a budget AV amp, and I've heard good things about the 7400, so looking forward to it a great deal.

Do you still have the 4300 to do a back to back?

I have a SR7400 and find the stereo excellent. The tonal balance is great. The Joss Stone CD sounds superb. Excellent instrument detail and vocal from the unit.

I do still have the SR4300 to do a back to back, the guy I've sold it to is willing to wait till the new amp comes before taking delivery.

The SR4300 is great for stereo, but is a little bright for my tastes. I've been wanting a warmer sound for a while, and I've heard the 7400's are a bit mellower and smoother.

We'll see when it arrives :):)

Reverting to the original question a link from the thread in this forum "Marantz 7400" to avs forums has answered the basic question as to why Marantz AV units are/were giving problems.
Hopefully it has now been fixed - but I will wait and see

Short memories on here...

When the earlier Marantz's were out there were non stop complaints for months about audio drop outs, 2 second delays etc.. "ohh make sure you buy one with a green dot on the back"...

There have been lots of people on here complaining about them. I've had two Marantz AV Amps personally and i've not had a problem but the balanced answer is that in there past there did appear to be a lot of complaints that have lessed with the newer versions :)

[EDIT: yes, these were when I was here under a previous incarnation before for some reason the account got blocked]

I had a SR5200 which had no end of problems. It went in for repair twice and came back both times with few, if any, of the problems rectified. I've managed to get a reconditioned SR5400 out of them as a replacement only to find it has faults (worse than those on the SR5200 even!) and will have to go back. Marantz are not my favourite manufacturer ATM.
