Stay away from Marantz - despite their rep, they're very poor performers in all areas. The Yammy would be a better choice, but better again would be anything from Denon :).

I was initially going for the yamaha (due to worries about the disc switching issue) but my local RS had sold out. They had the marantz 5300 in stock and as I couldn't pick between them I went for that. Haven't seen any issue other than some lipsynch causing me to remove all speaker delays.

I am happy with it, very good with music and my KEF eggs. The sixth speaker really added to the atmosphere (ie scared the hell out of me and I nearly switched it off) when I watched a horror film.

I started out many years ago with Marantz Amps and moved up through the range, never seeing any real reason to change manufacturer. My last Marantz was an SR6300 which I actually thought was a step-down on the SR6200 sound wise. I changed to a Denon AVR3802 not long ago and can honestly say it blows away the Marantz range (right up to the SR7300), in every single area. The step up in sound quality was a huge one.

I don't share the opinions of Mr. Aligator but I have had extensive personal experience of the Marantz SR range and they are simply not as good as the equivalent Denons.

I would recommend you take a look at a Denon around your price range, the 1803 or the older but better specced 2802.

I had a Marantz 5300, which i returned not so long back with delay problems. Since then, I have purchased the Yamaha 630 (Amp only).

In terms of movies I feel the Yamahas has the edge, I don't recall feeling so drawn into a film with the Marantz and since I've had time to play, the Yamaha seems to get better.

    Hope this helps

    Cheers
    Bob

Thanks for the replys, ive never realy considered the Denon range till now, im used to my Yammy DSPA 595A but im looking for somthing which will excite me (sound wise :p  ) which is why im also interested in the sony 1080 plus the added connectivity of the machine.

im realy getting confused over them all lol

ive read reviews which slate the sony and reviews which make it sound awesome, the marantz sound problem puts me off a lil because i know ill get a machine with issues, and im not sure if the yammy will be the machine to meet my sound requirements.

plus my local shops are either pushing the marantz like nothing else on earth and dont stock the other machines! and the 640 shld be comming out soon lol

Grrrrrrrr! oh well cheers for the replys, feel free to comment.

Ive just upgraded from a dsp a5 to a ax630se and I have to say the quality is fantastic, a big step up from my a5, esp for stereo deciding and general sound quality from movies.

I got it for £246 from unbeatable after price matching RS, at that sort of price you really can't go wrong.

Excellent amp and a big step up from what your used to, which is probably what your after. After getting my philips 963sa dvd player which outputs excellent quality cd/sacd/dd/dts sound and comparing it with my dsp a5, the a5 looked very poor by comparison. The 630 sounds almost identical if not better than the 963 with movies and more punchier with stereo, the 963 is more softer maybe its better.

    Anyway im amazed, for £250!
