Quick question on behalf of a mate of mine.
He has a non smart TV and he wants, iPlayer, Youtube etc on it.

I would have said, Firestick, which I have one of a few years ago.
    Or a Roku.

But it seems like YouTube is officially no longer working with these, unless you hack them.

What else can he buy, in the £30 - £40 range which would do the job?
He has an old 'Android box' but that's gone out of date and won't work anymore.

He does not wish to stream from his phone to a Chromecast.

    Any other options he has?

    thanks

On the Fire Stick you can access YouTube via the web browser. I imagine it’s the same with the Roku.

I have a Roku and the YouTube app is still on it and works with no problems.

May I ask which model Roku you have, and if it just came with YouTube out of the box, or you had to go some store and get the app ?

I know sometimes with these things, people get an app, then the app vanishes from the store, but it's not deleted as you already have it.

Just wanted to check it's still there to get if my mate gets one. :)

Actually you don't stream anything from a phone to a Chromecast. The phone app is just used to command what you want to watch, just like a remote. All the actual streaming is straight through the Chromecast video itself. Switch your phone off during streaming and the programme you are watching still continues!

Mine is the Roku Streaming Stick +. The YouTube app was already installed on it. Bought in July this year, so quite recent.

I was going to buy the Amazon Fire stick, but read that the YouTube app wasn't supported, hence the Roku purchase.

Thanks to all for the answers.
Having looked on Amazon at their actual advert for the £25 ROKU, it says in their text YouTube, so have placed an order for one for my mate.

    Thanks again :)
