    How is it done

Have loads of recorded footage stored in AVI files of various lengths

How do I go about bunging it on DVD in DiVX format and having a very basic menu at beginning ?

To burn avi files to a dvd just make a datadvd using nero, when you place your disc in your player it will list whats on the disc.

No it won't unless the DVD player can play Xvid or DivX files. Standard DVDs use an mpeg2 codec and Xvid/Divx are mpeg4

What audio codec did you use? Although, that shouldn't make a difference.
