    Hi,

I have just got a bargain price Sony HTDDW740S surround sound receiver and amp for my projector. I will be setting it up in a room that also contains a fairly large tropical fish tank. Last night I was wondering if the bass emissions would have any negative effect on the fish.

    Does anyone have any opinions??

    Cheers!

It depends on what film you are playing. Tropical fish tend not to be too keen on Jaws.

I'd have thought U-571 or Das Boot might give them a few worries too.:D

My fish seem to be surviving reasonably well about 8' away from my sub (and yes I play it loud !).

However I have read fish like peace and quiet, and my neon tetra's never seem to live to long.

The reason I originally asked is because I rent some rooms in a house and the landlord has his fish in the same room as my HT kit and I didnt want to kill off all his pride and joy.

I mean we can feel bass when it is up loud and it got me woindering how the fish would react to some powerful bass ripping through their tank!

You wait for the follow up of will 'one man and his dog' on an 8ft screen and PLII make my border collie go mad ?

The answer is yes, she went berserk and tried to round up all my HiFi gear.

Put it on loud and jump in the bath to hear what the fish hear. I'd suggest maybe auditioning the eels, Marrilion (fish !), but definatley not catatonia.

Seriously though it didn't seem to make any difference when I moved them closer, they were in the hall at one time, and the sodding tetra's died then aswell.

    Cheers

Fish have a lateral line running down their body.
This is used to detect minute vibrations in the water, such as insects on the surface and big fish coming thier way etc.

The upshot of this is yes they will know about that sub!
When they start floating on thier sides, turn it down!

All joking aside I think i killed a couple of my dads fish, when I used to live at home, by thumping out music on his system in our lounge. Turned out they were worth a lot of money! He never found out why so many died at once, he was testing the water ph and all sorts for weeks!

Hmm, my fish don't seem to like it when I stomp around on the suspended wooden floor (I usually pad softly about but sometimes I forget...), and I guess a sub going full blast is a similar sort of thing as far as the fish are concerned...? In any case, I don't think I've killed any fish by stomping, but if it were me, I would think twice about adding a sub to a room already inhabited by fish (don't suppose there's any chance Mr. Landlord would move his aquarium to suit your HT needs..? :) )

Yes, I think the vibrations will stress your fish, wouldn't consider it myself, at least my cat knows the score and can leave the room, fish will be worried for sure.

For fish, you all need to watch Deuce Bigalow :D

And my serious comment is this: vibrations might have an impact on the glass in the tank, "impact" being the operative word - don't want that baby to shatter ;)
