If I buy a high quality mains block (Black Rhodium) then do I need to buy single mains cables to link this to my equipment, or will it work effetively with basic cables from my equipment to the mains block?

It very much depends on who you talk to.
If I were you (If you're set on getting one) I'd try it with your normal cables and see what you think.
A lot of cable manufacturers offer a sale or return policy (60 days or so) to test out the cables. So I guess you'd probably be pretty safe. There are some rather excitable threads in this forum discussing the point/pointlessness of mains cables.
    Enjoy!
