    Hi all,

As I've posted a few weeks ago BK was going to make a "special" veneer version of the Monolith for us. I'll spare you the details but my wife had no objection to a nice (and big..) sub but it had to be finished with mahogany, just like our bookcase. Lucky for me BK was kind enough to make one, and now it has arrived!

I've attached some photo's of this really beautiful DF version so others can see what BK quality is like. The woodwork is really, really good and stunning. When my wife came home after work she loved it at first sight :D

Let me finish with how it sounds; it sounds great. This morning I've been using REW to see what the response is and so far I'm pleased. The punch that comes out of this sub is awesome, before this sub we only had 2 bookshelf B&W CDM 2's. The kids love it two and we're glued to their seats when Pink Floyd's pulse was playing.
The REW curve still has some bumps but I'll check in later if I run into things I don't understand or can't get fixed. So far we're happy !!

It's a bit dark for my decor, dahling, but I agree that does look superb.

Really can't fault BK on their workmanship.

Nice. I notice though that you "M" is on the left while mine is on the right. I think I prefer the left side like yours ;)

    Looks good.

I think you might want to spend some time on your sub placement though - it doesn't really look like it's in quite the right location........

I'm perfectly happy with the M on the left side :)

@ dave: why would it be in the wrong location? I never owned a sub before but I thought it was a good place to start. It's along one of the walls now, the corners are not an option and our room has a large open space. I'll try a few other locations in our room in the next days,

Is your sub really outside on the patio as it looks in your photos? :)

    I am drooling!

I have a 5.1 set (Castle Richmond 7i/3i/Keep2) in Mahogany, except the sub. I have been looking around for a matching sub for about 6 months or more.

And now you come and show me that!
I always dreamed about the Castle Classic Sub in Mahogany, although I dislike its plinth and the round corners, and it is waaay too expensive. The reviews I have read are also rather discouraging.

Based on my trusty AVForums , I first decided for an SB12+, and even had it at home for a weekend. Then I wanted more, and I was really convinced I would be adding a PB12+ to my setup. Unfortunately, I contacted SVS and they do not make custom veneers (anymore?). The so-called "rosenut" veneer does not match my LS, so I settled for piano gloss black. I haven't purchased yet only because the extra Christmas pay did not go as expected, but now that I see your sub I am having second thoughts...

Then again, is the Monolith really on a par with the PB12+?
I wonder if I could manage a "re-veneering" of the PB12+, because this is really important for me, although the piano gloss black wouldn't look bad either.

I'm sure my sub is not on the patio, I've attached a picture that proves our house really looks like this on the inside :) The bookshelf B&W's can be seen in the top corners of bookcase.

@ Cribeiro: I went the same route. My first pick was the SB12+ which slowly grew in size to a PB12+. The PB12 is more expensive than the Monolith but it was hard making a choice. But when BK said it would make a Monolith in Mahogany I was sold!
I've never heard a PB12+ but I can tell you that the Monolith shakes my doors in a 70m2 living room. I'm VERY pleased with it's performance.

    byte_nl,

interesting coincidence... But I am already spoiled, having heard a pair of PB12+/2 in an impressive system. I cannot risk being disappointed  (I am not saying that the Monolith is bad!). Plus, the SB12+ has a nice PEQ and offers several tuning points... I am now considering buying the SB12+ and finding some place to do the Mahogany veneer later on... :suicide:

Inspired by your report I've just this minute ordered ...

    " The Superb NEW XLS300 MK2 Subwoofer 300W RMS 10" + PR £389.00 "

    http://www.bkelec.com/HiFi/Sub_Woofers/XLS300PR.htm

I just don't have the room for a Monolith - which really is monolithic. When I came to doing rough measurements in likely locations in my slightly larger than standard sitting room of a pre-war semi I decided upon the XLS300 MK and, inspired by your photos, I asked BK whether or not it would be possible to do me one in the mahogany finish to match my Castle Harlech front, and Castle Keep center, speakers which, whilst a bit old, were doing well before I bought a Blue Ray player - at which time they were definitely feeling the strain from bass frequencies even though my receiver is the modest Denon AVR-1906 .

BK told me that it would be no trouble at all and the surcharge of £30 is very modest all things considered. Total cost comes to £428.80 delivered paid by credit card over the phone -delivery in about 3 weeks and they will phone me to arrange a suitable delivery day. BK is very efficient and yet friendly over the phone. So far so good.

Nice to meet another Castle fan!
    And, additionally, mahogany fan!

I really thought I had strange ears, because I like them so much, and they are barely mentioned in the forum (part of this probably due to the company closing down...).

I would really like to have a mahogany sub, but I also want to have the extra features and better performance of the PB12+. I even looking into re-doing the veneer, but it is difficult/expensive. So I am going for piano black, which matches any decor and looks great too.

Piano Black was my fall back choice if it turned out that a mahogany Castle matching veneer wasn't possible. The Black finish would have matched my Pioneer LX 608D and its table stand as well as the open shelf dark smoked glass shelf table type stand upon which it sits but happily they do Do mahogany.

Believe me you are well off without do-it -yourself veneering. My first substantial floor standing speakers were a ' do-it-your-self ' Warfdale kit based stereo pair way back in the 1970s, and even with the help of a fellow technician who was a model making specialist and a joinery enthusiast in the Department of the large Technical College where I was then working it was a bloody nightmare to build the damn things! Oh the Stink of Contact Adhesive in my colleague's work-shop:eek:

It is sad that Castle is going/has gone under. I do like the Castle sound and apparently at one stage they did produce a sub for the Harlech speakers but, given Castles situation, I don't care to take a chance on buying old or second hand Castle sub even if I could find one that would match the mahogany veneer on my present Castle speakers.

Mine's not got the 'M' either - and no driver for the last 6 weeks since BK have alloted all their drivers to new stock and won't be getting any more until the end of the month at least.
