Found out my dad had a spare set of speakers in the garage (celestion, is that any good?) so hes gona sort me out an amp so i can get them going.

thing is, all i've used before is standard PC speakers, which have all magnets shielded so they can be placed near PC screens and hard drives.

so whats the deal with these big 'analog' (if thats the word) speakers, will it damage my HDTV or computer / xbox hard drives?

sorry if it seems like a stupid question, any help is appreciated!

cheers

all your device will be fine and you dont need to worry about the magnets is your speakers. Celestion have a rep of being pretty good speakers, so they should sound good when setup, and certainly better than your desktop pc speakers.

Speaker magnets only caused problems with CRT TVs and so needed to be shielded. LCD or Plasma screens are not affected by speaker magnets and nor will your other equipment.

cheers for the replies, i thought that might be the case but wasn't sure.

my dad used to work in the hi-fi / speaker business so picked up these celestion speakers. he has since moved on so is out of touch since the introduction of LCD's. but celestion are a good brand then?
he said he was going to sort me an amp, and mentioned the british brands 'arcam', 'linn' and 'naim', which were big when he was in business. are they still good?

cheers

Arcam, linn and naim are all still good amps and any one of those will do you fine. Celestion speakers are also a reasonable make so by the sounds of it you are going to have the makings of a nice first system.
