Ok guys, looking for some expert help here..

Fitted new magic eye(global) and new cable over weekend to new LCD(hitachi) in bedroom from Sky+ box in lounge.

All instalation went well..No problem,RF2 was turned on and a picture was got once tuned..All channels turned over brilliantly..

    Great i thought..

    I have a problem though..

Intermittantly i get purple and green blotches and clouds of colour. The colours can ebb and flow and can look like the northern lights.I know that sounds a little dramatic, but its the best way to describe them..
The purple/green flashes can vary from small little patches or thin stripes to full screen interference.
But sometimes the picture is perfect, with no problems at all.The fault can flash in and out in seconds..
Sometimes the picture is so bad,its almost like watching a picture in "negative"..

    So..

1.Tried tuning into different RF channels..All exactly the same, fault the same.
    2.Soldered all aerial plugs..
3.Reset Sky+ box by disconnecting from 240v for 5 mins and doing reboot...No difference..fault still here.
4.Tried putting wire from RF1...seemed slightly worse.
5.Tried my normal terrestial aerial in LCD..picture is great with no problems, just get channels 1-4 though.
6.Tried retuning and fine tuning..No difference...

    Cable run is 10m..

I have tried to take a video of the fault, and i only have my camera phone to video it.The video is poor quality but the purple/green blotches can be seen on surgeons hands and on pipework halfway through the 15 second video.

Please have a look and see if you can shed any light on this problem..
    Any help appreciated..

    Regards

    Gareth

Can you post a picture of it ?
There is some absolutely terrible RF cable going around , usually its brown in colour , its not that is it ?

Think the TV on/off thing is a coicidence..

Tried it again this morning as the "interference" or whatever it is,is back in force.

Tried turning on and off,but makes no difference....

    Anyone got ant idea??:lease:

Think its give up time..Put hours and hours into this intall to make sure all cabling is perfect and routed neatly:(

Think im gonna have to go sky multiroom..Even though i dont want the extra expense or hassle..:mad:

It looks and sounds like bad shielding. Thats why I was asking about the cable. Try another piece of cable. Or some different cable.

Yes the details on the cable would help !

he he..thought they would..hid a lot of the cable so not easily accesible..but will get details later.

I was thinking of the cable myself, process of elimination more than anything..

In a way i hope it isnt, because of the time it took to install it.

Will throw another cable in there and see if that clears it up..If it does i wil be fuming!!!!!!

If the shielding is badly connected or damaged on the cable , yes it will.

I had the same problem. Cables all ok. Everything checked so The only thing left was low signal strength from the Sky+ box.

I added a Global T120 TV Distribution Amplifier (2 Way, coax) and problem solved. It has 2 amplified outputs and a TV Link passthru.

No power is needed as it gets its power from the Sky Box. I have seen them for £12.95 plus delivery etc.

    Hope this helps.

There was zero chance of the fault you have being related to poor coaxial cable and/or connections. Shame you've wasted your time barking up the wrong tree, so to speak. :(

If only someone suitably qualified to comment had seen this earlier...

The fault is with the TV, as you've now discovered as the fault is present on all inputs. Not a quick/cheap fix either - LCD's or plasmas rarely are.

Having looked at the thread where you'd bought the set from, it seems likely that it was faulty when sold. But proving this is impossible. If you ever get any response from the (very keen) vendor, he'll deny there was anything wrong with the set. And as you didn't discover the fault until a week or two(?) after the sale, I don't think you have any comeback.

There are many, many decent people on here and the vast majority of sales in the classifieds are trouble free. But there are some real dodgy barstewards too. I speak from experience - I had the misfortune to do a deal with one who is now serving a ban on here. But happily trading away on other forums.

The iTrader rating doesn't guarantee anything either - the 'chap' who tried to rob me had lots of good feedback.

I feel very sorry for you and hope you do manage to get a favourable outcome to this. Apologies for breaking the bad news and probably telling you what you already know.

    Good luck.

    Hi GOT...

I did get in touch with him fairly quickly, telling him that there was a potential problem with the TV..

Like you say,i have spent a lot of time and money trying to get the TV to work,i even bought a special wall bracket for it.So that has stuffed me too..

If i get no real joy,i do have a good friend who is a bailiff. He has recovered money for me before, and seems to have ways of tracking people down through "various methods".....

On the whole im a bit devastated by the whole experience..
It will teach me a lesson to go and buy from John Lewis instead of people i dont even know off the internet

Tried to contact again numerous times today without any success :(:(

    Grumpy old troll........

You seem certain that the fault wasnt in the cable, and imply that it was obvious from my 1st post, and thats fair enough..

So with that in mind what would you say is wrong with the LCD i have bought ?? Is it a common problem ??

I can't say I'm familiar with the particular model you have, certainly not off the top of my head anyway.

Without having a look at it, I can't say what the problem is. And it'll cost money to find out, whoever looks at it. Which is just throwing good money after bad.

Do you have any contact details for the 'gentleman'?

    Mobile only im afraid...:(

I know what area he lives, but thats it..

I just thought that this purple/green effect was a common problem with you commenting that it was nothing to do with cabling...

Its a shame, because when the picture is correct its very nice..But sometimes this effect just takes over the full screen. It looks like your viewing it through the eyes of "predator" ..lol..

Im now getting it in the ear of the missus because i bought off the forum instead of a shop..She is implying im a tight bugger, and its my fault fo trying to save a few quid..

Indeed,i think im finished with buying off the net at all..The last 3 things i have bought(A mobile phone,The LCD and a HD DVD),have all been faulty..

A lot of time and money lost by the looks of it..:suicide::suicide:

I was merely pointing out that poor coaxial cabling and/or poor rf connections could not possibly cause the fault you have and that it was a shame you'd been pointed in the wrong direction. That's another problem with forums... The fault is within the set, obvious to an experienced engineer.

The wasted time is irrelevant anyway, this guy's done you good and proper. Having no contact details and verifiable address means you have nowhere to go. It's a harsh lesson and sympathise with you - but you know you shouldn't have done the deal the way you did.

Get it on eBay as spares/repairs - you should get a few quid back. Some of the prices I see on there for sets which are beyond economic amaze me.

    Hope your luck improves!

    :)

    Yep..

    All true..

I guess you fall into a false sense of security when you buy off a forum..You live and learn anyway..

On the other hand,he could have give me any address and phone number,i dont think i would have checked beforehand, who would ??...
I do have a few details to give my friend who will have a lok for him.He is incredibly good at finding people. He tracked an ebay scammer once for me,went to there house an "extracted" the £80 they owed me. This was after they gave false names, addresses and details..
    So..you never know ;)

I may try and have it repaired, see how that works out financially..

I too hope my luck changes soon....They say it comes in 3's dont they..Well ive had mine!!!!!!
