Magellan Roadmate 800 - cannot pinpoint exact destination

We've recently bought the Magellan Roadmate 800. Input of destination - whether by address, postcode or junction - always asks for a streetname (or road number in rural areas). Many of our destinations are rural and can be miles from a street or a 'B' road. Although we live in a town, it is also unable to locate our house - recognising only our street or first part of postcode. Could this be because the software only recognises the first five digits of a postcode? I recently took my daughter for an interview in Leeds - the satnav informed us that we had reached our destination when we were still on the dual carriageway - was it because we had obviously reached the area of the first part of the postcode?
Have been in touch with Magellan but they were unable to solve my query - they have however promised to contact me later on in the week.
Are we inputting details incorrectly?
