Now he's after cyclists

I'm all for cyclists behaving themselves... but Kens idea is just nonsense. Typical left-wing Big Brother baloney. How many millions would this cost to sort out a few thousand dodgy cyclists?

And it's likely to be ineffective aginst the cyclists it's aimed at, who are likely to ride out with 'fake' plates anyways.

Just glad I don't live in London :)

Even if cyclists had insurance (it will never happen) do you think anything would change?

No because they will still be treated with the same contempt by both pedestrians and motorists

I agree that motorists have a general ill-feeling towards cyclists - but as a pedestrian that used to try and cross roads in and around the Financial District in London, I can tell you that I can't stand them either...

I've been knocked over twice by cyclists just going through red lights as if the rules of the road don't apply to them. Admittedly these are most likely couriers and not commuters but even so....

yeah there are some **** cyclists out there maybe there should be a test you have to take.

couriers think they own the road, have had to knock a number of them off their bikes ...strong riders but usually have crappy balance because they are carrying something.

I think we need to improve pedestrian standereds to, I mean what sort of idiot just stands there when they see somebody on a bike flying down a few flights of stairs towards them. atleast move out of the way and forms your complaints afterwards. Its not as if the rider can just stop in mid-air...

I can understand cyclists around the towns but the other day there was a cyclist on the main A-road between Hull and York at rush hour and the queue he caused was beyond belief! I felt like knocking him off, the selfish prat!

:censored: , these cyclists think they can go anywhere. If stairs are for bikes then they wouldn't have round wheels.:suicide: Stairs are for pedestrians only. End of story.

I have to say that I agree totally with the idea of licensing cyclists and being able to identify them while they are on the streets.

Cyclists in Cambridge are a complete bloody nightmare. They all treat the roads af if they are theirs and ignore all other traffic, road markings and traffic lights.

I have several scratched up the sides of my car from cyclists who force their way through gaps too small at red lights, and no way of identifying the culprits once they're ridden off into the distance.

Yes, I think it's commendable people ride to work instead of driving, and as a general rule, I give cyclists on the road the respect they deserve. However, there are a minority of cyclists out there who believe that cars are the enemy, and that riding around in a way that causes them most inconvenience and sometimes danger is a way of getting their "holier than thou" point across.

So insure them, license them and make sure they've all got proficiency certification before allowing them on the roads - that would sort them out!

Lol

All this talk of cylists should have insurance

It's not them who bump up your insurance, it's uninsured drivers who add on average 10% to the cost of your insurance premium. There are more uninsured drivers on the roads than cyclists in the UK. Does anyone complain about them?

Now there something that boils my :censored:

Next there will be a congestion charge for pedestrians who flock to Oxford Street.
Then there will be a twenty five pound charge for bigger vehicles including family cars.

Ken has gone mad with power. He is worse than Ronny Biggs.

Actually, ininsured drivers DO wind me up, and I DO complain about them, just not on threads about cyclists. :)

Just because clamping down on cyclists wouldn't save as much money as clamping down on uninsured drivers, doesn't mean it shouldn't be done? In fact, why not do both, then my insurance would be 15% cheaper!

Approximate Number of Cars on British Roads = 30 Million

Approximate Number of Bicycles on British Roads = 27 Million

Approximate Number of uninsured drivers on British Roads = 1.5 Million

-------------------

Approximate amount you are out by = 25.5 Million = 17:1

I'm with Ken on this one. Shouldn't cost a thing. I fact with a registration fee and a suitable road tax, London should be quids in.

Thats balcocks

There may be 27 million bicycles in Britain, but they certainly ain't all of them on the roads at once :rotfl:

PS Its one in 10 drivers who are uninsured so as there are 25 million UK licence holders that 2.5 million

Yeah, right. I'm sure he really wants to encourage cycling.

I'm all for registering bicycles but surely it would have to be done nationally. Otherwise anyone cycling in from outside of London (or claiming to) would be exempt.

you do know that all the cars aren't on the roads at the same time as well do you ?

.... if they were it would be permanent gridlock - the vast majority of cars spend the majority of the day parked funnily enough....

The figures usually quoted are between 1 million and 1.5 million uninsured drivers by the insurance companies, the BBC news etc
-- even way back in 1991, 1.1 Million people commuted to work by Cycle each day ..... thats not including all the kids going to school, playing out etc or old dears riding to the shops. (Source: Department of Transport)

.... and BTW, it is not a particularly smart thing to try and use the figues for license holders then match that up with the percentage of uninsured drivers on the roads.
Since there is no direct correlation between drivers, cars and licenses since:

There is not a 1 to 1 ratio between license holders and cars
- some have no car, some have 1,2,3 or more.

Uninsured drivers may or may not hold driving licenses.

My point is that the statistics, maths and common sense state that your assumption that:

"There are more uninsured drivers on the roads than cyclists in the UK "

was probably a tad 'incorrect'

but there you go.

While I'm still learning to drive, I too have been the victim of idiot cyclists. But what am I meant to do? "Excuse me mate, stop so I can jot down your license plate"

The only answer is more traffic police like it should be. No, what am I saying? Now that is :censored: right Tony?

I want Olivia to kick sand into his face and drag him to a cactus plant in the middle of the desert. I want Ken to feel scared and then I want Olivia to tell him that she will charge him for causing congestion in the desert.

Then she can go to the toilet on his head.

yeeeeahh I am with our Ken and all. Seems a veritably sensible measure and we could do with it down where I live as we seem to have loads of lycra louts riding on pavements and up one way roads in the wrong direction.
