I am looking to get the base 13" MBP from the education store for about £770.

Will I still get my £145 off an ipod touch if I buy it at the same time?

Yes. Just follow the links and the rebate procedure and use registered post to send the stuff in.

I'm inclined to say no but there seem to be so many exceptions these days eg. HE discount in store without proof etc. As you say you can only ask.

Macbook pro arrived yday looks nice. Do you know which bar codes i need to send back for the ipod rebate. There are barcodes on outside of brown box and then also bar codes on the bottom of the macbook white box. I heard somewhere that you needed to cut out the barcode (incuding box) from the macbook box ? is that true ? that would leave a big hole in the macbook box ?

    cheers mate

Its the MacBook box and yes it does leave a tiresome hole. Also the same for the iPod. I got a Nano for free when I bought via the scheme (Touch not included then) and aside from cutting out the serial # its still unused in the box, keep meaning to flog it.

If you go to the online rebate reg page it will show you pics of what you have to send in - and send by recorded delivery for safety.

    Just a quick tip...

To save cutting a big hole out of the side of your shipping box (incase you ever need to sell it on and post it) just use a hairdryer to warm up the glue of the sticker and carefully peel it off, stick it to another piece of cardboard from an old box

Just dont get the hairdryer too close to the label or it may burn the label

By strange coincidence I have both the original box with hole (no bigger than the barcode?) and the uncut box of the third replacement.

    thanks for the answers folks.

I was under the impression that if I bought a MBP from the HE store, I would get the 3 year applecare for free. After a call to an applestore, it doesnt seem to be the case? they say I get a 70% discount on applecare.

    Anyone?

    This causes so much confusion!

You do get a free three year warranty the only difference between it and full Applecare is shipping costs - you can purchase this ("the Uplift") for about £45. This means that during the 3y warranty if you have a Mac that has to be collected and shipped you don't have to pay. Given the cost of one incident could be £30-40 for return courier costs it makes sense to get it unless eg. you are near an Apple store where you can just walk in and hand it over.

See the link in my sig for more info. HTH

    Thanks for the help... BUT

I have just been to buy my MBP and they insisted that what you say is not true. Does this only apply to purchases made online? I ended up paying the extra £45, but I did say that if I found anywhere that says you do get a 3 year warranty.... I will be back to kick off!

I quoted the bullring store with what you said

It applied to online purchases unless they've changed the HE policy recently. Apple have surreptitiously changed a lot of other things recently - for example now its not possible to enrol in the One to One program unless you've bought from Apple instore or online and sessions are going to include more than one person and there's a limit to how many you can book per month. They've shed around 10% of their store staff before Xmas so that's probably a contributor.

The stealthy dropping of the 9600M GPU in the base 15" MBP is more significant with Snow Leopard arriving as its no doubt a core that could have handled some of the 'Grand Central' traffic.

Yea macbook pro is £770 with FE discount too !

Thanks for reply Tenex. I managed to get the barcodes off the box without cutting any holes in them. You think i could just pop them in an enevelope or do they need to be attached to the cardboard from the box leaving a hol e in the box ?

When i did this deal last year it did say to cut the barcodes out but this year it didnt specifically say to cut them out i dont think?

    cheers

I think it would be hard for them to insist they should have been cut if its not said explicitly.

Stick them onto paper, but scan/photocopy it first, and send by recorded.

    Just in case!
