Use Expose. Go into System Preferences and set it up so that it uses your screen corners. It rocks :)

Apart from that, I can't think of anything I use that isn't included out-of-the-box. Get used to using Spotlight - apple-space to bring it up on the menu bar, then just type in your search - start applications, find documents, videos, email, whatever. No need to use the Finder, or the Dock for that matter.

Extra media players are handy I guess. VLC and MPlayer for OSX do it for me.

iTunes plugins are fun. I recommend JewelCase and FountainMusic. CoverFlow is excellent too.

Apart from that, you'll just be able to get on and use your computer, and find yourself actually enjoying the experience.

Foutain music is just a pretty, bouncing dot type iTunes visualisation thingy. Not that special now I come to think about it :)

CoverFlow is just gorgeous. The picture looks nice on his site, but when it's actually running it's something else. It's like flicking through a deck of cards, but the cards are all your album covers. Just flick your mouse over the deck, and it shuffles through with a gorgeous animation, with sublime reflections on the shiny surface below (like iChat AV). Total eye-candy, but I don't care. It's lush.

Also follow the link below to get msn messenger for the mac:

    http://www.microsoft.com/mac/

You might also like to try Adium:

    http://www.adiumx.com/

Which is another messenging program but can connect to multiple networks.

Other then that cwick has covered everything else. If you get stuck try these forums:

    http://forums.macrumors.com/
    http://www.macosx.com/

One last thing - if you want to delete something using the keyboard use:

    Command-backspace

And to empty the trashcan try:

    Command-shift-backspace

Where command is the special mac key on your apple keyboard and backspace is known as the delete key.

personally I find quicksilver (search google for quicksilver+mac) to be better to use than spotlight. spotlight's great for being built in but quicksilver lets you do lots more, (from what I understand!)

firefox obviously!, adiums very good, and mercury (mercury.to) if u need a msn client that can do webcams.

    enjoy, macs are great :)

Is the Mac Mini OK for surfing ? I think I read some comments somewhere saying it was slow for internet browsing.

Nah, it's fine. Just make sure it's got plenty of RAM in it (1Gb).

Not on a mini, no. You'll need a 'special tool' (i.e. a spatula), and a steady hand. Plenty of websites to show you how though.

Has to be done though - you'll see far too much of the 'spinning beachball of death' with just 512Mb. Apple should be spanked for ever shipping an OSX box with less than 1Gb if you ask me.

I asked Stuart to set up a mac specific sub-forumm so we could discuss the AV aspects of them ... especially Font Row as a media centre interface and hooking mac up to screens, projectors and AV amps ...

Stuart retitled the main forum thread but mightconsider a sub-forum later ...

This link might interest those non-new iMac owners though !!

If it's a question of numbers of members interested in a mac forum, I for one would be delighted to talk pure mac and learn from others, especially in terms of AV aspects.

That makes 4 and I know there are a few more out there ...

Looks like Front Row for everyone might be a little closer - interface is soooo much nicer than MCE ... I hope that Apple will leave some SDK room so the likes of El Gato can add the live tv/pvr functionality straight in ...

Front Row for everyone is here now ;) It's pretty slick - even have a clicker script for it too, so it's working from my Palm - sorted :D

I can't remember if I've asked this question before so please humour me !
Will the Mac mini cope with iTunes playing Apple Lossless encoded music ? The reason I ask is that I've got an old Athlon 1.4Ghz computer running XP that really seems to struggle playing lossless stuff.
Also, are there games for the mac mini ? The sort of stuff I would be looking for are gentle games like card games and chess and stuff like that.

The mini will cope with lossless, no trouble at all. Mine uses 4-5% CPU when playing lossless.

No idea on the games John.

Forgot that OSX comes with a pretty good Chess built in - it supports voice recognition, so you can talk to it to move pieces :)

    More on gentle games here.
