    Hi,

Just bought a second hand mac mini, which had a clean install of Os Tiger 10.4.11.
Booted it all up for the first time, all very excited...however, Front Row was not on the system and the apple remote did not work at all. I've downloaded a fix for Front Row and it all works fine, but the remote still doesn't work.

    Here's what I've tried:
    - Turn on & off the IR in Security settings
    - Looked in System Profiler and seen that the IR sensor does not appear in the USB Hub section (which it should according to various web sites)
    - Checked remote is working through camcorder view finder, after changing the battery.

I think it is ht IR sensor on the Mac that is faulty.

Does anyone have any experience of this?

I bought the mini as a media pc in the lounge, so the lack of remote is a disaster.

    Thanks

Which model Mini is it? Have a look under the Apple menu (top left) > About this Mac > More info

Front Row wasn't a feature of the PPC based minis but was retro-installed on some by users after FR was first launched, though not supported by Apple hence the Apple IR remote won't be recognised. There are other remotes though the Keyspan being the most popular from memory.

Well that definitely should have FR and the IR sensor. Do you have the original install discs? Might be worth re-installing the OS if the IR sensor isn't showing in the USB section. Can you borrow another Apple remote to test with after that?

I've done a clean install of OS.

Front Row doesn't work at all, even with keyboard shortcuts.

Searched, found Front Row.pkg, launched but got a message saying Front Row not compatible with this computer (which would make sime since if IR not working as Front Row only works with IR Macs?).

So now I've lost Front Row and IR remote still doesn't work.

Tried to re-install from OS disk, but still wont launch.

Downloaded sofacontrol to try something else, and it said no IR Remote was attached, so agin looks like IR receiver is just not working.

Bad luck with that, I don't know if its user serviceable?

If you still want to use it as a FR/TV device then the Keyspan remote I mentioned might be an option ISTR it works wirelesly via a USB dongle. Unless you have some recourse through the seller? HTH

Seems odd that the FR install fails - are you 100% sure that it's a genuine dual core mini?

Does it actually have the IR sensor fitted? It's behind a small square "window" at the righthand end of the CD slot.

Yes genuine dula core, checked unit and on screen displays.

IR receiver is to the right of the DVD drive.

    Mystery!

Its a slighty desperate hope but perhaps its been accidentally disconnected if the RAM was upgraded by the user?

Might be worth checking/replacing the battery inside the Remote control

Oops just seen youve done that already

Ram was upgraded by previous user, so could have disconnected IR.

Is that simple to fix if I open the Mini up?

I've upgraded PC's before (new graphic cards, Ram etc), but nothing serious.

    Cheers

Honestly I don't know there should be some pics of open mini's around on the web that woudl tell you though. It might have been broken rather than disconnected, without an inspection its impossible to tell.

Is the Mac or Remote paired to another system / remote? if so you will need to unpair it. (back and play for 20 secs, I think for the remote)
