MAC crashing!!!

Hi there, havent posted here for a while,as everything has been good,i have been watching on the sidelines though!!

This morning, woke the macbook pro from sleep,to use for Logic.
All was fine, started to use Plex to watch a film, transfer some files to my external drive, and noticed that time machine was backing up,then.....blank.
It went off,had the chimes, then says it quit due to a problem,(i didnt get any error codes).
Thought nothing of it,i was just surfing the web,(logic wasnt running).
It happend again,off then chimes,it had quit due to a problem,send report,so i did.
This happend 4 or 5 times this morning.
It hasnt happend since i unplugged my external drive, could the time machine be filling up,and it causing an error?
I didnt get any error codes,so cant get any info.
I did an update yesterday, for the Java plugin, but that about it,evrything else has been normal use.
Oh,it crashed on imessage as well, same thing, swir=tched right off, then the restart chimes...

Anybody else had this similar thing recently.?
Its a macbook pro,late 2011 mountain lion,8gb Ram.
Cheers.

Just tried to reair the mac hdd, says it has errors that need to be repaired through disk utility using recovery,.
Currently performing abtime machine restore from earlier on today, before it started to happen.
I did install a game for my boy today, and that did make the sustem go a bit strange,ie,the screen went blue, and wasnt running very smooth with the graphics,.
Ill see how this goes.
If itbis the hdd, thatll be my second one,in 12 mnths, not good.
Lucky my whole system is only 180 gb.
Would an ssd, be a bit more "stronger"to failures?(if it is a failure of course)

Now its saying the mac hdd is ok,no errors.,but it wont start, the drive for the time machine,is having errors.
Disk utility says it cant be fixed.
This is really winding me up.
The macbook is stuck on bootup screen, the one with the apple logo, and the little circle spinning round and round.
Apperntly my time machine drive, has failed also,...
Not happy.

OK.
I eventually reinstalled ML,on the MacHDD.
Seems to be working ok ...for now.
Still not happy,as my time machine back-up drive has failed.
What if this drive was in a Time capsule?
It renders the concept quite useless,i understand that nothing(hardly),is un breakable, but, all in all, its the 3rd drive that has been renderd useless using a MAC.
My original Macbook HDD,had to go back, for replacement,i used to have a 160gb external drive for movies, that lasted about 1 month, now my 500 gb drive, for time machine, and films, has also karked it.

Not happy.

How many backups do i need?
Well, looks like the more the merrier, why is it eating my HDD?

Not sure if I am following you 100% - but I thought while re-installing the OS, you can pull off the TM backup to restore your HDD contents. Or, is the TM backup also on the internal HDD/volume?

Once in a while, I do clone my Mac's internal HDD/volume, so yea, back up over several physical media to prevent that nightmare.

I tried to do a system restore using a time machine back up,(from an external drive),which seemed to go ok,but,it still wouldnt let me boot from the macHDD,so i then had to do a fresh install of ML,.
I dont know why,but it didnt do a clean ,fresh install, just said it was installing other componants.,and all the apps, data was still present, after it had completed the intsall,it mentioned nothing of using the time machine.
But,by then,i had found out the external drive, with the time machine back ups, wasnt working, and disk utility couldnt repair it anyway.
Im not sure if that is part of a time machine restore as ive never had to do this before.

Im happy my macbook is working again, but, have no idea why it would do this to me,again, and what i can do in the future to prevent this.
Also, really peeved ANOTHER HDD has perished, thats 3 in 1 year, for no reason, and through normal use.
As i said,it started to happen randomly, using no "weird"programs,no "dodgy"sites,....i cant think how or why this has happend again.
Last time i t ook it back to Apple, they managed to save the data from the maCHDD,as i didnt have a TM backup, very similar to this recent ballache.

Where installing a OS, the Migration Assistant will help restore from a TM backup. So, try re-installing the OS again if you haven't been able to access your TM files?

I did do a restore of osx,and it does look like the migration assistant has put my macbook back on the straight and narrow!!(but staright after, the drive is now dead,)

Very peeved that another drive has bitten it(the external one).
But,heres the weird bit,a few months ago,i had the same problem,my mac wouldnt get off the boot screen,AND,i DIDNT have a time machine back-up,yet took it to APPLe,and they managed to save the data, and give it back,as it should be,all files correct,no loss of any info.
If,it was a fresh install of OSX,wouldnt that format the drive, wipe data and start afresh?

Thats what im confused with,i performed a clean install of ML/OSX,without the external drive(with time machine on it)connected......all my data was still on it when i booted up......

Should it not have wiped the drive and "started again"?

Just plugged the external drive in,says it can ead the drive but cant write to it.,and cant perform time machine back up.....Is it full??
Just veryfiing the disk....(ext one)...

Its all sorted now mate.
My external drive, was going to be part of a f=raid, but didnt get enough drives to continue to do so.
I really dont know what happend,or how it got sorted(well disk utility repaired it),but,as to WHY??i havent got a clue.
My two external drives(one for time machine,1 solely for films),have both died.
My Mac HDD,i dont know how that repaired,it wouldnt boot etcc, then all of a sudden(after fresh install of osx)it worked??All my data was still on the Machdd, and, that was without using my Time machine back up,as the drive had died....
Im really going to have to try and make sure that my drives DONT get pulled out of the USB,as i fear, that not ejecting them,or the USB cables,(being cheap caddys),dont connect too well, and lose connection, leading to my MBP,thinking its been not ejected properly, lead to my dead drives.
Im looking into a new router, with usb ,so i can keep my drives, permantly plugged in.

Yes, that is actually what I do when I port files from one Mac to another - TM updated on source, and the destination Mac re-installed with Migration Assistant to get back all user accounts, data, etc.
