Hi

My friend is thinking of buying the following speaker set up:

3x K15's
2x K4's
1x K10 (SUB)

If he can afford it, he would also like to add a rear speaker or two for EX/ES and would like to know which matching M&K speaker(s) would be best? Do you recommend 1 or 2 speakers at the back?

Also, he loves the tight/fast and controlled sound of the sub, but is there anything in the same price range that will sound similar, only go down deeper, to say 20-25Hz? It can'r be anything too large!

Cheers

Ideally the K4's would be used at the side with a pair of direct radiating speakers behind the seating position. All of the K series are voiced similarly so it wouldn't matter which ones were used.

Kane,

You should keep the speakers matching - if you're going for a THX Ultra 2 type setup using direct radiating speakers as suggested by Ian, then the surround backs should be another pair of K15s (the cheaper K5s use a slightly different tweeter).
In this case the two surround backs should be located on the back wall less than 2M apart and facing forward.

Alternatively you could also get great results using another pair of K4s and positioning them slightly further apart on the back wall.
(tri-pole surrounds should be about 2M high up the wall).

The idea of a di-pole speaker is to create the illusion of several speakers resulting in a wide dispersion effect making it difficult to localise the actual speaker.

M&K take this one step further by using a tri-pole design (M&K patent) which actually creates a hybrid of di-pole and direct radiating speaker - this in practice works very well in a number of installations.

The K10 is a perfectly good sub for this setup, a better alternative would be a bigger sub from M&K (big is better for bass)

If you want an alternative then you may want to check out the new Strata from Rel (just don't tell M&K!)

Hi Kane
Try and get a demo of the b&w asw675 its one of the best compact subs ive heard and costs less than most m&k subs.
Cheers Gonzo.

An even better alternative would be a bigger sub from someone else. There is nothing wrong with M&K subs but they are very expensive and better sound per pound is available elsewhere.

You may notice that many people (gonzo and myself included) run M&K speakers with other makes of sub.

I'd have to agree with this M&K in this country is Expensive

Current models from B&W, Rel and MJ Acoustics might offer better value for money if price is an issue.
However IMHO M&K produce some of the best subs available at any price - tightly controlled and great slam plus they have a complete comprehensive range covering most applications / requirements.

Gonzo,

Well done on your choice of HK AVR8500 and M&K 850s - thats a great combo.

However IMHO you should ditch those K4s and get the SS150THX which are much better - maybe its an aesthetic or financial thing?
