Does anyone have any opinions on how the THX optimiser found on Star Wars DVDs compares to a proper calibration disk like DVE. Basically, is it worth spending £15 on DVE, if you have a copy of any Star Wars film?

I tried setting up my tv with teh THX optimiser, only thing is you need blue filter glasses to set the colour.

Actually, I've got a pair of the blue filter glasses (I purchased them from the THX website for $5 including P&P) and have used both the PAL & NTSC versions of the THX Optimiser to set up my TV. My question is perhaps better worded as:

"Are the tools in the THX Optimiser sufficient for properly calibrating a TV, or, would you get extra (worthwhile) tools, allowing you to do a better job, with something like DVE"?

THX Optimiser may get you into the ball park so to speak, but it's designed more for the disk it's on than a blanket calibration for all, so you should get DVE (for PAL) or Avia (for NTSC) for a more accurate set-up. If you're display doesn't have memories for PAL and NTSC setups, then you should see if your DVD player has a 0ire setting (or similar) in the menu for NTSC. That way your black level settings will be the same for both systems.

If you're happy with the way things look, then you've no need to do anything more, but if you want to check geometry and grey scales for colour calibration, then you'll need DVE and Avia.

    Gary.

Cheers for the info. My DVD doesn't have a 0ire setting available in the menu, but the TV does have separate memories for PAL & NTSC. I'll look into getting DVE (PAL & NTSC versions).

Nice looking home theatre, by the way.

the dvd essentials disc has slightly more in depth settings than the thx optimiser like hue

but the thx will be spot on for the settings it does have as long as (like you) you have the blue filter for setting colour:)

    Thanks GreenBars. :)

THX Optimode will only be spot on for the disk it's on more often than not. Bytehoven over an AVS scopped the THX Optomode and found them to be set differently, so setting using one disks Optimode will be wrong for another. Some actualy allow setting for below black and above white IIRC while others didn't.

Putting Avia in found the settings to be off for some disks too.

    Gary.

I received a copy of PAL DVE at the weekend and am impressed with what it has to offer. I'm happy to say that my red, green and blue were all set up correctly, but there are still a few problems with the geometry. This weekend's project I think.

The THX logo has a drop-shadow behind it. You should set the brightness so that the shadow is just invisible.

I'v been trying to access THX Optimiser on my Star Wars III ROTS but could not find it on either Disc 1 or 2 menus, nor via my Toshiba SV-150 DVD Player set-up options. Have pressed just above every botton on my remote and viewed every, chapter, advert, special feature etc. I'v also been on THX web site and it give advise on setting up using Toy Story and The Incredibles. :lease: can u advise me how to access the Optomiser:lesson:. I also have SW II Clones.

Whne you're in tha main menu, go to the 'Language Selection' menu, and you will see it there (approx in the middle of the screen, depending in the menu it gives you).

It specifically mentions 'Toy Story' (1 & 2) and 'The Incredibles' because they were released with enhanced versions of THX Optimiser.

The links to the audio tests and the video tests are generic to all the THX Optimisers that I have used.

Where do you get the glasses needed to do some of the video tests?
