After a an extension build and full downstairs redecoration I'm after setting up a home cinema from scratch on a budget. I'm undecided between 2 av receivers which will be the bulk of my budget as I will hopefully add to this and upgrade the speakers later. I'm looking at the YAMAHA RXV375 and the Onkyo TX-NR525. Any advise regarding these or even alternatives around the same price would be great. I'm hoping to buy some budget floorstanding speakers as well at the same time then add a centre speaker and sub at a later date. I'm hoping that some floorstanders will provide adequate base for now till funds allow a sub. So any advice on those will be appreciated too.

I will be only be connecting sky hd box and pc for now and my phone for music from time to time. So although the needs I have are limited now I want some sort of futureproofing regarding the receiver.

Alternatively iv seen an all in one package which is the SONY BDVE4100
Smart 3D Home Cinema 5.1ch 1000W Bluetooth WiFi NFC. Although a good price I really want seperates if I can or would this provide what I need asap with the option of buying some bigger floorstanding speakers later on be a better option?

Forget about floorstanders. The money you use to buy them will be better utilised on the AV receiver. You'll need a sub irrespective of whether you've got floorstanders or not and floorstanders are hard to accommodate.

Look for a receiver slighly better than those you've been considering and buy a discounted 5.1 speaker package. Maybe look at last years Yamaha RXV675 or Denon AVRX2000 which can both be had for under £300. You could then combine this with something like Monitor Audio's Vector 5.1 package for about £300?

Thanks for the advise but really like the look of floorspeakers over normal ones. I'm looking at paying between £200-300 for the speakers and I think the amps above should serve me well as I'm no expert and will not be using them to their full potential. Any recommendations for speakers?

Floorstanding speakers for £200 - 300. It isn't as much a matter of recommending something as suggesting what you can actually afford within that budget?

Also note that you should be buying speakers that can easily be paired up with a matching centre speaker. Many make the mistake of buying discontinued speakers for up front and then find that they can no longer get hold of the matching centre speaker.

Given your budget, Mission are probably your best bet. The Mission MX3 speakers can be had for under £250 and you can get the matching MXC1 centre speaker for about £100.

So I've taken all the advice above but still not decided on an av receiver. Can I throw this pioneer into the mix for comparison :

Pioneer VSX-828

Have you listened to any of the kit you are looking at buying?

What they sound like to you is much more important than a recommenation from an internet forum.

My guess is that at the price point you are talking about the differences between one amp and another will be minimal.

Concentrate on any features that you want / need and narrow the list down to a couple - then try and listen to them, prefereably back to back, if you can hear a difference then great - if not buy the one that looks best in your eyes.
