I've bought both the extended editions of LOTR and found the packaging on the outer boxes to be a disgrace, both have already started to peel and look untidy. The whole point of buying Special and Extended editions is because you want to keep the film for years. I've heard from some that the region 1 packaging is far superior is this true ?

Yes, the R1 box is far superior.
Much tougher cardboard and the appearance is
    also more book like.
The film itself is still the same though ;)

Yup - the region one version is vastly superior. This has been discussed many many many many times on here before... My opinion: never buy an EIV (Entartainment in Video) DVD, always buy the Region 1 version :lesson: :)

The Extended Edition DVD that comes in the Boxset has far better packaging than the Standard Extended Edition, it is made off a tougher Cardboard.

Like the FOTR Gift Set, R1 TT also contains an extra disc - a nicely packaged documentary on the making of Gollum.

The R2 Gift Set also contains the extra disc which covers the making of the Gollum model.

I think this thread is more appropriate in the new 'DVD Comparisons' forum. Moving...
