Anyone have an idea about the total LOTR-generated revenue so far, including ticket sales + DVD/Video sales and rentals (+ licensing revenues + ...)? And what were the total costs (production + marketing + ...)?

    A good investment, no doubt!

No ideas, anyone? I couldn't find anthing via google. Of course the parties involved aren't shouting out the numbers from the mountaintops, but there are people who make estimates about things like this for a living...

I think the budgets were about $100m each film.

Box office takings were close to $billion each film, gives you some idea of the profit made.

I suppose DVD sales/rentals will bring in another few billion (not to mention many generations of HD successors...).

I'm glad that a film project that was so brilliantly executed has been this successful. Good work, PJ and crew!!

Latest word (from the New York Times):

It seems that Peter Jackson is suing New Line over his proper share of the LOTR revenues.
