I'm just ordering some bits & pieces from Play and I notice they have the extended version of parts I and II of LOTR.

Are these extended versions that much better than the standard versions?

I already have all 3 discs so I'm a little bit loathe to fork out another £40 or so for the same movies...

    Hi :)

For me the extended editions are more fulfilling and quite a bit longer ;)

I'm a bit of a stickler, but I prefer the R1 sets (although they may be even more expensive  ) as the outer cases are of better quality and there are no issues with (slight) sound problems that some people notice with the R2 sets. They also look so good on the shelf

Let us know what you decide,

    Sigs

    Thanks Sigs,

I really don't care about sleeve art/cases or extras and bonus discs.
All I'm really interested in is the movie itself.
Of all the DVDs I own, I have never watched one of the bonus discs or even looked at the features on the main disc, if there are any.

I enjoyed the movies so if the extra footage adds to the enjoyment then I'll probably get them.

I suppose my 'normal' LOTR discs are only worth a couple of pounds each then?

Oohh - you say that now, as did I when I first bought them :D

I was exactly the same - until I started reviewing! Now, when I'm bored and have watched everything I own (a number of times) and fancy something new... I find myself reaching for the extras discs!! The extras on these particular Platinum Editions may just change the way you watch DVDs ;)

It is frightening just how quickly the market changes, but I think your "normal" editions have got to worth more than that  Stick them on the DVD Sale/Trade forum and see what you get...

I appreciate that some people enjoy the extras but I'm not one of them and that will never change.
I really don't have time to waste on anything that is not the main feature and if I did have the time, there's plenty of other things I really should be doing instead.

So many things to do and only 1 me... :D

Brogan I think you should buy the Extended Version of the LOTR movies. I like them so much better because they contain more of the material that’s in the books. Another good reason to buy is for the DTS sound tracks that aren't on the first releases. As for the extras, they aren't bad. I quite like the 4th disc.
Keep an eye out as they can be got now for the same price as the 2 disc versions, £10.
Buy them now as I get the feeling that when the third one comes out all the prices will go up.

    £10, are you sure?
That's quite a bit cheaper than the Play prices; £14 for The Two Towers and £18 for Fellowship Of The Ring.

Well almost £10. The prices go up and down nearly every week.
I could have sworn that CD Wow had then afew weeks ago at £10.99.
Somebody was selling them on the forums for £8 not so long ago.

The extended versions are the way to go if you've read the books or want more from the theatrical versions. The Two towers extended version is particularly good, filling some plot and character holes you may not be aware of.

As the extended versions are split over two discs and each half clocks in at 1hrs30+, I tend to watch each film over two nights treating them as seperate films. This sounds odd, but means you do not have to reserve you're entire evening to watch one film.

As for the extras, if you're a tolkien fan or a movie buff, they're a must. The most interesting features detail the book translations and the weta workshop documentaries. The inclusion of lauded tolkien artists was a particular stroke of genius and is well documented here.

I'm not a big extras fan myself, I tend to browse once and watch the features of interest (Theres plenty of interest on these discs). I do, however, enjoy commentaries. And good ones really enhance the enjoyment of a film.

    Roll on ROTK extended version

    Thanks guys.
I guess I'd better get them ordered then.

Now, who wants to buy some boring old standards LOTR DVDs? :D

Well I've ordered the extended versions of FOTR and TTT but there is no equivalent for ROTK.
There is another thread in the LOTR forum stating that there is no more stock available.
So how is it that parts 1 & 2 are available but the latest part isn't?
Presumably there will be another production run sometime soon?

The extended version of ROTK has not been released yet. Should be due in November, but there's been a lack of detail regarding its contents. Does anyone have a link for further ROTK extended version details?

    Thanks for that info' Toasty.
I was just a bit confused as on another thread one poster stated they had already sold out of ROTK EE.
Not long to wait then :)

    no disk swapping! yey!

    1920x1280 or 1280x720! yey!

DTS 6.1 Discrete! (only a yey if they do it properly and have some music sent to the rears, as it is with TTT its quiet as a mouse at the back of my room).

Just recieved FOTR and TTT extended versions.

There is a nasty 5mm scratch on disc 1 of TTT though :(
I won't have time to watch this within the next 28 days and therefore won't be able to confirm if it affects playback or not.

Does anyone know what Plays returns policy is in cases like this?

Do I just send it back asking them to replace it with an unscratched disc?

I've only had that problem once with a disc from play & if I remember correctly I had to send it back (registered delivery) & when they received it they sent out a new one & refunded my postage.

Phone them to make sure though. ( I phoned to get the ball rolling before sending it back anyway)

    Thanks for the info'.
I've sent them an email but I'll give them a few days to respond as I suspect they're a bit busy dealing with all of the Star Wars whingers ;)

Isn't the picture quality better on the extended versions, since the (somewhat longer) film is spread over two discs, allowing a higher bit rate?

    I'm sure I wouldn't notice on my current TV (28 in. 4:3 :( ).

How do you know this, or is it just speculation? if not, where did you find out, and what other dvd's are scheduled to be released on Blu-Ray 2005/2006? :)

Yep, all speculation, but it will happen, and whilst HD-DVD offers a better compression technology in their MPEG4 implementation, i think Bluray will win out simply because of the companies who are already selling Bluray recorders in Japan.

I think it's more likely going to come down to whichever format gets the more comprehensive collection of films out that people want to buy that'll win out. It's all right being able to record, but you really need content to make people want to buy into a platform. I'm hoping Blu-ray will win out because of the disc capacities the format should be able to achieve (isn't it quoted as 50GB with a few disc layers?)
