Kotaku Magu: Famitsu *Hearts* Lost Planet

The Xbox 360 is sure shaping up to have an impressive line-up. Heck, even the Japanese press are wowed. (We'll wait for the general public to play catch up.) Capcom rang the red Kotaku mailbox to send word that weekly Japanese game mag Famitsu had just finished its Lost Planet review. The magazine tested out both single player and multi-player. Four editors reviewed the game on a scale of 1-10 (with 10 being the best), and here's what they had to say:

1) Cool that it feels like a big-budget sci-fi movie. You'll need to keep collecting Thermal Energy to stay alive, so you'll have to stay in the action at all times. If you find the game too hard, swallow your pride and play it on Easy mode. Playing against players from around the world looks like fun. SCORE = 9

2) Plays pretty much like an orthodox FPS game. The game balance lets you play through the game without much stress. Very inventive in that you have your human weapons and Vital Suit weapons, and you can use them all on foot. The slower movements of the hefty Vital Suits balance out their overwhelming firepower and add to the tension. SCORE = 9

3) From the realism of the snow and air in the environments to the battles that really put you in the middle of the action, this game has it all. Battles against giant enemies and robots are super-exciting. May take some people a little time to get used to the unique controls and gameplay concepts. Story plays out well, with twists and turns throughout the experience. Online multiplayer seems a bit bland, but it's fun to play nonetheless. SCORE = 9

4) Despite the weapon balancing being fine-tuned with the multiplayer in mind, the story mode truly is a blast! Battles with creatures in the extreme conditions are intense and very challenging. The bosses are big, and the pattern-recognition style of boss-conquering is very rewarding. SCORE = 9

The review hasn't been published yet, but should be out next week. The game will be released in Japan on December 22nd and in the US on January 12th. With Blue Dragon posting good reviews in The Land of the Rising Sun and now Lost Planet, is the Xbox 360 a console that Japanese gamers can continue to ignore?

Interestingly I noticed that DOA: Extreme Volleyball 2 actually made the top ten chart in Japan last week. Maybe things are looking up?

Yeah think DOA sold about 40k+ not bad for an installed base of less than 180k.

Think the 360's sold about 7k in the same week.

Would imagine this week would be a lot better given the launch of blue dragon.

who cares if it sells in japan/asia ?? i wont be getting any of microsofts trillion dollars and competion is a good thing wouldnt want PS3 out of the game.
end of the day there a very insular country and wont be to excited about a western product. the all like RPG`s because they have no lives, where as westerners with FPS`s like doom have time for a quick blast with friends online then down to the pub or out with GF somewhere for real interaction.

dont want millions of crappy RPG`s PS3 can fill that dull market. when GOW10 or GR49 is out on xbox3000 in the year 2050 everyone will want to be playing FPS`s as they level of realism will be so high where as most RPG`s will still be buying and selling virtual sheilds on everquest type titles

Apparently they will have 200,000 Blue Dragon console bundles available for the games launch.

They were all sold out in the first day they were made available for pre order apparently (All be it at a silly £120 each)

If you look at the rubbish launch line up of the ps3 and the fact that none of the games look any better than their 360 counterparts (Most worse in fact as far as the multi format titles go) you wonder what the problem is.

The problem is the Japanese are exceptionally racist. The word for foreigner in Japanese actually has dual meanings; strange / and unwelcome. Says it all really.

Getting them to buy a us console is like getting blood out of a stone but you have to hand it to Microsoft. They are giving it a go. Personally I have to agree. I dont see why we should subsidise their market with cheap hardware so consumers over their can buy it and then sell it round the oowrld at a profir (Because its so cheap).

They should cut their losses and concentrate on Europe and and US market where they are doing well.

I had to come into the thread to find out what '36' actually meant - the Famitsu reference wasn't enough context for me I'm afraid. As a result it sounded really bad (to me) from the subject line alone!

Might be more useful for those of us not familiar with Famitsu to include an 'out of XX' addition to the subject line.

wow didnt know that about the japanese word for foreigner but i guess you are right about japanese buying their own electronics but as you say.. well done to microsoft for at least giving it a good go

as far as im concerned as long as microsoft cant gain in the japanese market then they will ultimately lose this console war in the long run and it would be great if they focused on the european and US markets but by trying their hand at the japanese market at least it gives us more variety in games (i.e RPGS, etc)

hee when i first read title to this thread i was thinking

"damn lost planet gets only 36 out of 100!! hahaha)

Surely though Blue Dragon shows that if the right games are released in the japanese market then they will buy the 360. I think the 360's lack of success in Japan is mainly down to the lack of games suited to that market but if other good quality RPG's are released such as Blue Dragon then the console will sell.

ahh but its not though the key point is they dont want US hardware they want Sony or nintendo stuff, you will get a hardcore fan base and the figures may seem impressive until you see how many people there are and how many Wii and PS3 have sold, fu*k em if they cant see a quality product i dont see why microsoft should bother more than anyone else. they dont even get FPS games at all they say they have no depth ? even games like fable dont sell that well.

il take GOW, COD3, Doom3, Prey, Fable2, Assasins creed, Forza over bluedragon, adventures of a small elf, the lost candle, and of course final fanstasy 34527.

Why is the ipod such a hit in Japan then? Do the west 'get' train sims and dating sims?

At the end of the day i'm sure that the Japanese will buy consoles because of the games on them - just like we all do. The Xbox had very few games that appealed to the Japanese market and failed in that sector as a result. The US and Europe are the two biggest sectors though and if MS does well in those two sectors then they will be very well supported by Western and Eastern software houses as at the end of the day a big user base means more profit. If all the big eastern software houses (Capcom, Sega, Square-Enix, Namco, Konami, Temco etc.) support the 360 then the Japanese will buy the games.

ipod is completley different my friend
:rotfl: why?

hmm some real xeonphobic comments w.r.t Japanese, I've worked with quite a few and they can be an introverted race but calling them racist is way off the mark. They have very different values to us but that don't make them bad people. It takes time to get to know them.

I'm finding the fact that the mods haven't pulled anyone up on this yet quite suprising.

I'm surprised too. The only racist around here seems to be Sinelanguage for his disgusting stereotyping!

Back on topic, this game is looking superb! Any decent pre-orders about?

I wonder if on some Japanese forum somewhere, they are discussing how obsessed the west are with shooters, and how "insular" we are as we dont play dating sims and railways games that are made in Japan.

Does Lost Planet have a xbox live Co-op mode? I'd be much keener to get this if it does after playing through GoW with my mate.

Also does anybody know when its due in the UK?

Not sure about the Co-op question (but play.com seem to think it has online co-op) but its release date is the 12th Jan (at the mo!)

Have just seen some videos on this game and it looks amazing. They have reviewed in japan and it got 9,9,9,9 in famistu mag. I think it comes out on the 12th jan. Who needs a PS3 when all the games on the xbox 360 seem better.

because in 1yrs time PS3 will have equal quality games that mite not be on both platforms and if your into games spending another£350-400 on a machine with blueray is no biggy just own both :smashin:
