your current driving license will show what you are allowed to drive, this varies on when you passed your test.

If the vehicle has a maximum authorised mass, which exceeds 3.5 tonnes, but not 7.5 tonnes then a category C1 licence is needed. If the maximum authorised mass exceeds 7.5 tonnes then a category C licence is needed. This is usually a full UK driving licence.

A category C licence is a Heavy Goods Licence Class 2, (vehicles with an authorised mass excedding 7.5 tonnes. Class 1 being for artics. HGV licences are renewable every 5 years and you will have to get a medical certificate from your doctor as well to apply for a provisional licence. I passed my HGV almost 30 years ago so perhaps somethings have changed now.
